Georgian

The Caucasus for its size can boast more languages than any other region on earth. Of the 40 or so native tongues Georgian is the most widely spoken (by up to 5 million, of whom 3 million are ethnic Georgians). With its own unique script, Georgian has been written since the 4th century and has a rich literature of all genres. Outside Georgia, however, it has remained virtually unknown and unstudied, its grammatical intricacies being discussed by a small but ever growing succession of foreign specialists. The present work represents the first Reference Grammar of this challenging language to appear in English and is the summation of 20 years of intensive study by its author.

Raga Harmony: Harmonic Structures and Tonalities in Indian Classical Music

A NEW ERA IN CLASSICAL MUSIC UNVEILED BY DR L. SUBRAMANIAM. Dr L. Subramaniam, who’s been called ‘arguably the greatest violinist in the history of Indian music’, is also one of the most formally inventive musicians of our time. A polymorphous talent, he is not bound by genres or geographies nor fear of the untried and uncharted. It is in this spirit that, as a young student, Dr Subramaniam set about creating a system that would integrate the melodic nature of the Indian raga system with the harmonic structure of Western classical music. What those early years of study—tried and tested over the decades—led to was the possibility of orchestral compositions for Indian ragas, evoking their mood within the rich sound of symphony orchestras. Raga Harmony unveils Dr Subramaniam’s revolutionary thirty-six-scale concept that will allow compositions by Indian composers based on Indian ragas to be performed by some of the most prestigious orchestras across the globe. The use of this system enables the generation of lush harmonies that are not only uncommon and pleasing, but also intricate and intellectually intriguing.

A Grammar of Gaagudju

Gaagudju is a previously undescribed and now nearly extinct language of northern Australia. This grammar provides an overall description of the language. Australian languages generally show a high degree of structural similarity to one another. Gaagudju conforms to some of the common Australian patterns, yet diverges significantly from others. Thus while it has a standard Australian phonological inventory, its prosodic systems differ from those of most Australian languages, with stressed and unstressed syllables showing marked differences in realisation. Like many northern languages, it has complex systems of both prefixation and suffixation to nominals and verbs. Prefixation provides inform...
