Thermohydrodynamic models of laser irradiation of metals examines models of continuous- and recurrent-pulse irradiation under conditions of dimensional and thermochemical treatment. Hydrodynamic mechanisms of melt displacement under conditions of dimensional and thermochemical treatment. Hydrodynamic mechanisms of melt displacement under conditions of laser drilling are discussed and the space-time structure of temperature in metal under the effect of a moving recurrent-pulse heat source is studied analytically and numerically. A thermo-hydrodynamic model of the welding process is analyzed and the two-dimensional problem of the heating of metal and melt motion under vapour pressure and surface tension is modelled numerically. Convective stirring of an admixture under the effect of pulsed laser radiation is considered and numerically investigated.

The threat of radiological terrorism has recently come to the attention of the international community, as it became clear that terrorist organizations are seeking nuclear and radiological material to manufacture and use improvised nuclear devices (IND) and 'dirty bombs', and/or commit acts of sabotage against nuclear power infrastructure.

Liquidator: The Chernobyl Story

In the late April of 1986, the world learned about the quaint town in the Central Ukraine — Chernobyl. The largest nuclear catastrophe in the history of mankind, which affected the lives of millions and millions, had forced the USSR government to take unprecedented actions. One of them was the formation of a cleanup crew from the Army reservists. They were tasked with a titanic chore of cleaning the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant from radioactive debris after the explosion of Reactor #4. Sergei Belyakov, then a PhD scientist, volunteered to become one of the many 'nuclear jumpers' of that long-forgotten crew. This book sums up his recollections about that nuclear jumper stint. It is written not as a traditional memoir, but as an alloy of personal views and feelings, templated over the information about the Chernobyl disaster from the official sources of those days. It will give the Western readers a chilling sense of the magnitude of the event that brought down the almighty Soviet Union.Related Link(s)

Particle Accelerator Physics

Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.
