The Sins of Rachel Ellis

Pandora is a sweet, bright, sixteen-year-old girl when she leaves her parents in London to spend the summer in Wales with her great-great aunt Rachel. Since she knows Rachel Ellis is very old, Pandora is surprised when she meets a youthful woman who doesn't look more than forty years old. Naturally inquisitive, Pandora sets out to explore the surrounding countryside, only to discover that her aunt is feared by the local townspeople because of her inexplicable youth and because her strange gardener, Ewen, has an eerie, seductive power over the village women. Protected only with her innocence, Pandora searches for her aunt's dark secret in an atmosphere of fear, suspicion, and ageless evil. As...

Mind the Screen

Mind the Screen pays tribute to the work of the pioneering European film scholar Thomas Elsaesser, author of several volumes on media studies and cinema culture. Covering a full scope of issues arising from the author’s work—from melodrama and mediated memory to avant-garde practices, media archaeology, and the audiovisual archive—this collection elaborates and expands on Elsaesser’s original ideas along the topical lines of cinephilia, the historical imaginary, the contemporary European cinematic experience, YouTube, and images of terrorism and double occupancy, among other topics. Contributions from well-known artists and scholars such as Mieke Bal and Warren Buckland explore a range of media concepts and provide a mirror for the multi-faceted types of screens active in Elsaesser’s work, including the television set, video installation, the digital interface, the mobile phone display, and of course, the hallowed silver screen of our contemporary film culture.

Shortly after William Penn was granted the tract of land known as Pennsylvania by King Charles II in 1680, he began offering 'rights' to a set number of acres for investors. These 'rights' were generally offered in lots of 5,000 acres, but 'rights' for smaller tracts were allowed, the minimum purchase size being 250 acres. The purchaser would receive a warrant in exchange for his money. This warrant provided proof of his right to select a tract of land of specific size, not already claimed, once he arrived in America. Once suitable land was located, the purchaser then applied to the Surveyor General for a survey, which once completed enabled the purchaser to apply for a patent, when he could...
