Commonwealth Trade Review 2015

Fundamental changes are taking place in the global trade landscape, and the Commonwealth, with its diverse membership, is adapting to and coming to terms with these changes. This shifting landscape offers tremendous potential for Commonwealth countries to expand their trade – both between members and their overall trade. Although it is not a trading bloc, member countries can also take advantage of and leverage the Commonwealth for greater gains, while focusing on several broader priorities to improve their trade performance. Commonwealth countries offer insightful perspectives on topical issues that can contribute to promoting the role of trade in development. This Commonwealth Trade Review addresses these issues in four parts: Part 1 – The Commonwealth in a changing global trade landscape Part 2 – Intra-Commonwealth trade: emerging dynamics and opportunities Part 3 – Unleashing the trade potential: priorities for the Commonwealth Part 4 – Perspectives on topical issues in trade

From Exception to Promotion: Re-Thinking the Relationship between International Trade and Environmental Law tells a new, unconventional story of the nexus between international trade and environmental law - a story in which the keyword is synergy rather than conflict, and where the trade regime was always meant for something greater than simply trade liberalization. This ‘something greater’ was peace in the first half of the 20th century. Today, it is sustainable development, environmental protection, and social inclusion. Environmental protection is therefore neither antithetical to the overarching purpose of the trading system nor simply a ‘non-trade’ issue to be incorporated within the trade regime, but rather part of its very nature and purpose. By telling this ‘untold’ story of the nexus, this book intends to raise historical awareness and open a constructive discussion on the future of the trade regime and of international economic law governance at large.

Geopolitical Economy radically reinterprets the historical evolution of the world order, as a multi-polar world emerges from the dust of the financial and economic crisis. Radhika Desai offers a radical critique of the theories of US hegemony, globalisation and empire which dominate academic international political economy and international relations, revealing their ideological origins in successive failed US attempts at world dominance through the dollar. Desai revitalizes revolutionary intellectual traditions which combine class and national perspectives on 'the relations of producing nations'. At a time of global upheavals and profound shifts in the distribution of world power, Geopolitical Economy forges a vivid and compelling account of the historical processes which are shaping the contemporary international order.

Society, Space, and Social Justice

Society, Space, and Social Justice addresses multiple contextual intersectionalities, highlighting the underlying processes and causes contributing to the genesis and regeneration of emergent and extant spaces of (in)justice. Employing quantitative and qualitative techniques underpinned by elucidatory theoretical frameworks, the contributors to this collection investigate intersections of class, disability, gender, race, and “the other” within sociocultural and political-economic structures in varied geographic scales in Brazil, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and the United States. This book’s thematic diversity—the environment and outdoors, employment and labor, gendered/othered violence, health and disease, housing, infrastructure, and urban design—gives it interdisciplinary appeal. This timely collection examines and unpacks the complex mechanisms by which social justice can be perverted, thwarted, or achieved.
