The close relationship between religion, medicine and natural philosophy in the post-Reformation period has been documented and explored in a body of research since the 1990s; however, the direct and continued impact of Melanchthonian natural philosophy within the individual Lutheran principalities of northern Europe in general and Scandinavia in particular still has to be fully investigated and understood. This volume provides insight into how and why medicine and natural philosophy in a 'liberal' and Melanchthonian form could continue to blossom in Scandinavia despite a growing Lutheran uniformity promoted by the State. Inspired by research emanating from the Cambridge Unit for the History of Medicine, here a number of young scholars such as Adam Mosley, Morten Fink-Jensen, Signe Nipper Nielsen and Martin Kjellgren are joined with more established scholars such as Andrew Cunningham, Jens Glebe-Møller, Terhi Kiiskinen and Ole Peter Grell to create a volume which deals with not only the major issues but also the leading personalities of the period.
This book examines the practices of contesting evidence in democratically constituted knowledge societies. It provides a multifaceted view of the processes and conditions of evidence criticism and how they determine the dynamics of de- and re-stabilization of evidence. Evidence is an essential resource for establishing claims of validity, resolving conflicts, and legitimizing decisions. In recent times, however, evidence is being contested with increasing frequency. Such contestations vary in form and severity – from questioning the interpretation of data or the methodological soundness of studies to accusations of evidence fabrication. The contributors to this volume explore which actors,...
This book presents in detail the problems and ethical challenges in daily oncological practice. In western industrialized countries, roughly 25 percent of all citizens still die from cancer. Despite significant progress in basic science and in individual areas of clinical care, even in the 21st century, being diagnosed with cancer has lost none of its dread and can still be a death sentence. This situation raises many problems and challenges for medical ethics, e.g., the question of the benefits and risks of prevention programs, or the right to know and not to know. Clinical trials with cancer patients and quality assurance for surgery, radiotherapy and medication also pose a series of ethical dilemmas. Furthermore, cancer treatment is a psychological challenge not only for patients but also for physicians and caregivers. The issues of adequate pain management and good palliative care, of treatment limiting and the question of assisted suicide at the end of life also have to be considered. In order to reflect the subject’s diverse and multifaceted nature, the book incorporates legal, ethnographic, historical and literary perspectives into ethical considerations.
The volume uncovers some new ground previously neglected (). In summary, this is a competent conference volume German Studies Review .
This book deals with the tradition of the medical theology of Martin Luther. Another focus is the analysis of the development of the theologica medicinalis in baroque Lutheranism, by means of previously un- or scarcely evaluated source material.
Homer in Wittenberg draws on manuscript and printed materials to demonstrate Homer's foundational significance for educational and theological reform during the Reformation in Wittenberg. In the first study of Melanchthon's Homer annotations from three different periods spanning his career, and the first book-length study of his reading of a classical author, William Weaver offers a new perspective on the liberal arts and textual authority in the Renaissance and Reformation. Melanchthon's significance in the teaching of the liberal arts has long been recognized, but Homer's prominent place in his educational reforms is not widely known. Homer was instrumental in Melanchthon's attempt to tran...
After the end of the Schmalkaldic War, the reorganization of the territories began. 233 letters show the many uncertainties involved in the altered political situation as well as Melanchthon's state of mind as he received many offers from other places but still felt home was where he could be with his friends. Melanchthon was much sought after as a conversation partner when it came to planning the university system. He took part in negotiations regarding the foundation of a university in Jena but was then summoned to Wittenberg where deliberations were in progress regarding the reopening of the university. He was lonely there without his friends, since he missed being able to exchange ideas ...
Modern medicine has changed the everyday handling of health and illness noticeably. Medical progress even changes the health and illness affiliated terms. A deep running conflict of values has come into existance, challenging for ethics and the legal order through predictive medicine, stem cell research, reproductive medicine, transplantation medicine or euthanasia and the additional rationing in the health sector. Kreß addresses newly formed questions such as the option of testing drugs on the bases of human embryonic stem cells or the palliative sedation of the dying. In his ethical discussion the author takes cultural and religious plurality in account and emphasises on a patient?s personal right of self determination and justness of participation. Special emphasis is placed on a human right to health protection; which hasn't found enough attention in medical ethics and legal rules. Children's health protection is also kept in mind through the work.
