A Tight, Practical Integration of Relations and Functions
As in other fields, in computer science certain objects of study can be synthesized from different basic elements, in different ways, and with different resulting stabilities. In subfields such as artificial intelligence, computational logic, and programming languages various relational and functional ingredients and techniques have been tried for the synthesis of declarative programs. This text considers the notions of relations, as found in logic programming or in relational databases, and of functions, as found in functional programming or in equational languages. We study a declarative integration which is tight, because it takes place right at the level of these notions, and which is still practical, because it preserves the advantages of the widely used relational and functional languages PROLOG and LISP. The resulting relational and functional language, RELFUN, is used here for exemplifying all integration principles.
Legacies of Change
The essays in this volume examine institutional change in five of the most important areas of economic life in central and eastern Europe after 1989: international and regional economic reintegration; the restructuring of the industrial base; how economic interests are to be represented; fiscal and budgetary reform; and reform of the social welfare system. The editors use these research findings to buttress a somewhat heterodox theory of institutional dynamics, one pointing to "discursive structures" and "governance structures" as key dimensions that, in combination, affect institutional change in this part of the world so that an economic "revolution" becomes an evolutionary processes of gradual transition.

Regional Governance and Policy-Making in South America

Using the UNASUR (Unión de Naciones Suramericanas) as a case study, the author investigates the process of policy-making in regional public policy fields in South America. The project focuses on intergovernmental structures of regional organizations as an institutional framework for a variety of independent processes in regions. It also challenges the perspective of democratic states as unitary actors and seeks to analyze the factors which favor or obstruct regional processes in different policy-fields.
