Devout laywomen raise a number of provocative questions about gender and religion in the early modern world. How did some groups or individuals evade the Tridentine legislation that required third order women to take solemn vows and observe active and passive enclosure? How did their attempts to exercise a female apostolate (albeit with varying degrees of success and assertiveness) destabilize hierarchies of class and gender? To the extent that their beliefs and practices diverged from approved doctrine and rituals, what insights can they provide into the tensions between official religion and lay religiosity? Addressing these and many other questions, Devout Laywomen in the Early Modern World reflects new directions in gender history, offering a more nuanced approach to the paradigm of woman as the prototypical "disciplined" subject of church-state power.

Queen of Sorrows

Queen of Sorrows takes an original approach to both late-medieval Italian history and the history of Christianity, using quantitative and qualitative analyses of a remarkable archive of 1,904 testaments to determine patterns in giving to the Virgin of Loreto shrine in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Bianca M. Lopez argues that in central Italy, as elsewhere, the cult of the Virgin Mary gained new prominence at this time of unprecedented mortality. Individuals gave to Santa Maria di Loreto, which houses the structure in which Mary is believed to have lived, as an expression of their grief in the hope of strengthening family lineages beyond death and to care for loved ones b...

"Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (c. 1486-c.1542) painted some of the most beautiful and fascinating ceramics produced in Renaissance Italy, often drawing on classical mythology for his subjects. He was also a poet, and commented on the tempestuous events of his time--including the infamous Sack of Rome in 1527--both in verse and allegorically in the imagery of the dishes and plates he decorated. This book is a comprehensive study of Xanto as a remarkable painter of Italian Renaissance tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) decorated with narrative subjects (istoriato), a poet and a loyal follower of the condottiere Francesco Maria I della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. It contains a full transcription of his sonnets with a parallel English translation. A list of maiolica by or attributable to Xanto is another first. Through his ceramics, beautiful and interesting in themselves, and here superbly reproduced, it provides an enlightening cross-section of the dawn of the early modern era"--Provided by publisher.

A superb catalogue of the British Museum collection of maiolica and other Italian Renaissance pottery, published in two volumes with a slipcase, ribbon and cloth binding. The British Museum collection of Italian Renaissance ceramics is one of the most important and most comprehensive anywhere in the world. Apart from containing many works of great artistic beauty, it is unequalled for its high proportion of signed, marked, dated and armorial pieces, crucial for scholarly study of the subject. This is the first systematic catalogue of the collection. The 495 detailed entries cover the period from 1400 to 1700 and include maiolica, incised slipware and the rare 'Medici porcelain' made in the g...
