Leakage Management Technologies

In North America, leakage management programs are not pervasive, even though leakage can be reduced with some simple starting points that result in multiple benefits to the drinking water utility. North American governments are increasingly expressing interest in this area by mandating water audits and other initiatives to improve water supply efficiency. North American utilities can benefit from international experience in leakage management helping to reduce water losses, defer capital expenditure on new water resources, improve the service level and public health protection, and improve the efficiency of distribution system operations. The primary objectives of this project were to (1) re...

Palatine Church Visitations, 1609

The district of Kusel was situated in the western part of the German Palatinate, from which area came many early emigrants to America. Considering the almost permanent residence of the Palatines in a given area (prior to emigration), the proof that a particular name occurs in an early visitation, as this publication does for Kusel, is almost sufficient evidence of the linkage between the emigrant and his forebears--a full century before the great period of emigration.

Reichspersonal

Mendez v. Westminster

  • Categories: Law

While Brown v. Board of Education remains much more famous, Mendez v. Westminster School District (1947) was actually the first case in which segregation in education was successfully challenged in federal court. Finally giving Mendez its due, Philippa Strum provides a concise and compelling account of its legal issues and legacy, while retaining its essential human face: that of Mexican Americans unwilling to accept second-class citizenship. 1945 Gonzalo and Felcitas Mendez, California farmers, sent their children off to the local school, only to be told that the youngsters would have to attend a separate facility reserved for Mexican Americans. In response the Mendezes and other aggrieved ...

Software Development and Reality Construction

The present book is based on the conference Software Development and Reality Construction held at SchloB Eringerfeld in Germany, September 25 - 30, 1988. This was organized by the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) in cooperation with the German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD), Sankt Augustin, and sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation whose financial support we gratefully acknowledge. The conference was an interdisciplinary scientific and cultural event aimed at promoting discussion on the nature of computer science as a scientific discipline and on the theoretical foundations and systemic practice required for human-oriented system design. In keeping with the conversa...
