Smart societies pose new challenges for police organizations. Demands for more efficiency and effectiveness test police organizations which are often resistant to change. This book uses the concept of the abstract police to describe the way in which police organizations have tried to adapt to these new evolutions and the consequences. The chapters stem from a conference called “Street Policing in a Smart Society” which sought to frame and analyse these developments in policing. In this book, the concept of the abstract police is introduced, analysed and then challenged from different angles, looking at the evolutions related to technology, plural policing, police discretion and police decision making. As such, the book is a reflection of current debates on policing and police organization, aiming to give input to the debate by providing new insights on police and police work.
This book tackles the growing issues concerning the managerialism and bureacratisation of criminal justice systems across a number of jurisdictions. Here, managerialism means the move towards more standardised, bureaucratic and efficiency-driven systems, influenced by a desire to ensure predictability, control risks and, ultimately, economic savings via a more efficient process. The volume explores the phenomenon of managerialism in selected national criminal legal systems, covering all stages of criminal case processing from arrest to the imposition of sanction. The selected countries represent diverse socio-economic, political, cultural and legal traditions including common law, civil law,...

Topics include: • research methods in police research; • police professionalisation; • police and diversity...

The treatment of victims and complainants by the police is examined in this pioneering new work. Case studies, based on interviews carried out at the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, in the United Kingdom, reveal that victims and complainants are routinely discredited by police agencies. Whilst in the United States, victims may include anyone subjected to police interrogation, particularly those of African-American origin, complainants across the globe may include victims of rape, bereaved families, and individual officers. The reason why certain victims and complainants are targeted by policing agencies is complex and leads to an investigation into police ...

It provides a unique, scholarly, and international overview on policing crises and emergencies, addressing the different contexts and challenges of working in extraordinary circumstances, dealing with unfamiliarity, and working with and alongside other agencies, as well as the significant political and public requirement to return as quickly as possible to normality. Sections include coverage of: • Policing disasters • Policing public health emergencies • Policing political protest • Policing terror and conflict • Policing mass violence • Policing extreme crises and emergencies Each section is filled with a variety of international case studies examining best practice in the policing context, together with a scene-setting chapter tying together key theoretical and conceptual concepts. It is essential reading for all engaged with professional policing, law enforcement, and public order.
