In one of his sermons, the medieval preacher Bernardino of Siena listed seven ’fathers’ to whom one owed obedience: God, one’s natural father, godfather, confessor, benefactor, a government official, and any elderly man. This book seeks to answer the question of why medieval Europeans saw the need for so many ’fathers.’ Why was fatherhood so appealing as a metaphor? Situated at the intersection of social and cultural history, the study draws upon a variety of late-medieval and early-modern sources including witness depositions, personal letters and pedagogical treatises from the city of Basel, Switzerland. It focuses on how people from different walks of life invoked ideas about fa...
This 1995 book explores the acts of iconoclasm as the means to recover the participation of ordinary Christians in the Reformation.
Only those who are sure of their origin can know their destination. True to this principle, Anna Bálint for the first time presents the history of Clariant, the globally operating chemical company which was formed by a merger of Sandoz and Hoechst. Eyewitness accounts complete the portrait and give an informative as well as entertaining insight into the demanding task of successfully melding two distinct corporate cultures into a single strong and innovative enterprise.
Sebastian Castellio, linguist, humanist and religious reformer, is one of the most remarkable figures of the Reformation. Attracted by Calvin's reforms, Castellio moved to Geneva in the 1540s, where he wrote his influential work on educational reform. Ironically, it was Castellio's work as a scholar in Geneva, which was to lead to his falling out with Calvin, and ultimately his forced departure from Geneva and his resettlement in Basle. Exiled from Geneva, Castellio soon attracted a circle of like-minded reformers who opposed the intolerant attitude of Calvin, exemplified by the execution of the heretical Michael Servetus. It is Castellio's residence in Basle, where he developed his 'liberal...
This remarkable history tells the story of the independent city-republic of Basel in the nineteenth century, and of four major thinkers who shaped its intellectual history: the historian Jacob Burckhardt, the philologist and anthropologist Johann Jacob Bachofen, the theologian Franz Overbeck, and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. "Remarkable and exceptionally readable . . . There is wit, wisdom and an immense erudition on every page."—Jonathan Steinberg, Times Literary Supplement "Gossman's book, a product of many years of active contemplation, is a tour de force. It is at once an intellectual history, a cultural history of Basel and Europe, and an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century historiography. Written with a grace and elegance that many aspire to, few seldom achieve, this is model scholarship."—John R. Hinde, American Historical Review
The sixteenth century in Europe was a tumultuous time. It was the time of plagues, a time of wars, and a time of reformation. The Protestant Reformation was a decisive moment. We hear a great deal about men who shaped that time, such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, Thomas Butzer, and innumerable others. But who were the women who stood behind those men? One of them was Wibrandis Rosenblatt. Hers is a remarkable story. She married and buried four men in succession, all of them Protestant reformers. She endured the daily hardships and annoyances of the Protestant parsonage. She cracked the whip on a wayward son. She liked family outings, especially during the grape harvest. Eventually she was swept away by the plague of 1564. Through all this, Wibrandis was a faithful witness to Christianity. The author of Frau Wibrandis, Ernst Staehelin, was a church historian and a professor at the University of Basel. He himself was Swiss and a descendent of Wibrandis. ææææææææ From the Translator's Preface: Wibrandis is "the story of a woman in a man's world, almost totally eclipsed by the illustrious men in her life. She bore the brunt of it."
A selected bibliography and an index complete this visually splendid and scholarly presentation."--BOOK JACKET.
