Foreign Direct Investment

From the back cover: Foreign direct investment and multinational enterprises play a major but controversial role in Canada. Why do we see multinational enterprises use the subsidiary to transfer their techniques and products rather than national enterprises selling their products to foreigners through markets? What impacts do multinational enterprises have on the economic growth, balance of payments, industrial performance, and national independence of the home country? Professor Safarian addresses these questions, and others, as he surveys the research of Canadian economists in this field. Although economists have recently produced more and better analysis of foreign direct investment, the author maintains that additional research is required. The complex macro- and micro-economic impacts require more precise theoretical and empirical study....Sarafin concludes that economists and other social scientists must close the gaps in understanding foreign direct investment.

Progress in Economics Research

This series spans the globe presenting leading research in economics. It is perhaps a sign of the times that economic weapons such as sanctions seem to be as powerful as or more so than tanks. International applications and examples of economic progress are invaluable in a troubled world with economic booms bursting like so many penny balloons. Globalisation, outstanding and jobless recoveries present economic issues of concern to millions.

From the Foreword: The unstable performance of the Canadian economy in the 1970s and the emergence of apparent problem areas of a persistent nature have led to widespread concern over Canada's economic future. Whether or not these problems are due to structural changes or cyclical phenomena is difficult to determine at the present time because of the amplitude of the recent business cycle and the occurrence of unusual events in the international economy....The present study is designed to review economic developments in Canada in recent years and in the process disentangle cyclical from structural changes.

Competition in the Open Economy

With the nations of the world becoming more interdependent, it is imperative to take international influences into account in understanding the organization of industry within a country. This book extends the structure/conduct/performance framework of analysis to present a fully specified simultaneous equation model of an open economy--Canada. By estimating a system of equations of all the major variables, the authors can identify which variables are dependent and which are independent. They are thus able to assess the relative importance of such factors as seller concentration, import competition, retailing structure, advertising expenditure, research and development spending, and technical and allocative efficiency in shaping the organization of industry in Canada. In addition, using both industry-level and firm-level data, the authors develop methods for assessing the effect of structural variables on diversification strategies and the consequences for market performance. They also study the effects of such variables on firms' access to capital markets. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings for government policy.
