Laser-Induced Materials and Processes for Rapid Prototyping
The term rapid prototyping (RP) refers to a generic group of emerging technologies that enable very quick fabrication of engineering components primarily targeted for prototyping applications. With RP, very complex three dimensional parts or prototypes can be fabricated without the need of costly tooling and machining. This inevitably leads to much shorter design cycle time and lower cost of building a prototype. Its manifold benefits include significant productivity gains, cost saving, and shortened development time to introduce concept models. As such, RP technologies have attracted tremendous R&D interests from both academia and industry in the past decade. Many different processes and materials have been commercialized and used in industry primarily for the fabrication of physical prototypes. More recent interests in RP technologies are towards functional applications of the fabricated parts, such as in rapid tooling applications and replacements of damaged components. Many processes and materials have been commercialized but are yet to be able to fulfill the aforementioned functional requirements because of limited mechanical strengths of the fabricated parts.

Since a formulated concept of functionally graded materials (FGMs) was proposed in 1984 as a means of preparing thermal barrier materials, a coordinated research has been developed since 1986. The 125 papers presented here present state of the art research results and developments on FGM from the past decade.A wide spectra of topics are covered including design and modeling, fracture analysis, powder metallurgical processes, deposition and spray processes, reaction forming processes, novel processes, material evaluation for structural applications, organic and intelligent materials. The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis
Two infonnal meetings of consultants expert in hemostatic phenomena and in atherogenesis were held in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 1975 and February 1976 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Their purpose was to discuss the current status of knowledge concerning the thrombotic process in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. It was readily agreed that thrombosis often played a major role in plaque building and in plaque complication. It was also commented, however, that the data were qualitative in nature and that quantitative infonnation was remarkably sparse. The term thromboatherogenesis was thought to be appropriate for those phenomena in which the full expression of the thrombotic process is manifest. At the same time, recent research was noted in which what appears to be an important pathway for the initiation of atherogenesis arises from the reaction of platelets with injured arterial endothelium and'Subendothelium without necessarily involving the complete classical thrombotic process. A name was not coined for this circumstance, but it was held that thromboatherogenesis was not a fully appropriate one.
