Magnetite Biomineralization and Magnetoreception in Organisms

The mystery of how migrating animals find their way over unfamiliar terrain has intrigued people for centuries, and has been the focus of productive research in the biological sci ences for several decades. Whether or not the earth's magnetic field had anything to do with their navigational abilities has sufaced and been dismissed several times, beginning at least in the mid to late 1800s. This topic generally remained out of the mainstream of scientific research for two reasons: (1) The apparent irreproducibility of many of the be havioral experiments which were supposed to demonstrate the existence of the magnetic sense; and (2) Perceived theoretical difficulties which were encountered whe...

Nanomagnetism: An Interdisciplinary Approach provides a core foundation for understanding magnetic quantum-size effects at the nanoscale and their many applications across the disciplines. This textbook will be a valuable guide for students in new interdisciplinary courses in nanomagnetism and magnetic nanomaterials, an area that has experienced immense growth in the last two decades due to advancements in sample preparation, nanopatterning techniques and magnetic measurement instrumentation. The interdisciplinary nature of nanoscience also makes this book an ideal resource for scientists working in industrial laboratories and pharmaceutical and medical researchers looking to expand their understanding of the physics of magnetic probes. Key Features Discusses physical, chemical and nanotemplating synthesis techniques for the production of magnetic nanoparticles Covers experimental techniques for the determination of the macroscopic and microscopic magnetization of nanoparticles Discusses the role of nanomagnetism in high-density magnetic recording media, nanostructured permanent magnets, MRI imaging enhancement and magnetically guided drug delivery

Anoxia

ANOXIA defines the lack of free molecular oxygen in an environment. In the presence of organic matter, anaerobic prokaryotes produce compounds such as free radicals, hydrogen sulfide, or methane that are typically toxic to aerobes. The concomitance of suppressed respiration and presence of toxic substances suggests these habitats are inhospitable to Eukaryota. Ecologists sometimes term such environments 'Death Zones'. This book presents, however, a collection of remarkable adaptations to anoxia, observed in Eukaryotes such as protists, animals, plants and fungi. Case studies provide evidence for controlled beneficial use of anoxia by, for example, modification of free radicals, use of alternative electron donors for anaerobic metabolic pathways, and employment of anaerobic symbionts. The complex, interwoven existence of oxic and anoxic conditions in space and time is also highlighted as is the idea that eukaryotic inhabitation of anoxic habitats was established early in Earth history.

Magnetoreception and Magnetosomes in Bacteria

This volume details recent developments in magnetotactic bacteria research. It includes reviews on the formation and organization of magnetosomes, the genes controlling magnetosome biomineralization, and new cryogenic techniques to visualize novel cytoskeleton structures. Coverage also describes potential nanobiotechnological applications of the magnetosome crystals.
