This book, first published in 1990, examines the relationship between the Soviet Union and the Western Alliance at a time of great changes. Experts on a range of topics analyse the relationship from both the Soviet perspective (the impact of Gorbachev, and the role of Eastern Europe), and from the standpoint of the nations of the West including France, Great Britain and West Germany). Also included is a discussion of the role of the northern flank in Soviet nuclear-free proposals. The book concludes with an assessment of the challenges posed by the changing Soviet perspective, and the opportunities that these present for the Western Alliance.
The essays in this volume address the epochal change we are going through as a society. We have highlighted some of the key developments affecting the evolution of defense and security challenges facing the United States and its key allies, as well as innovations and developments in selected military technologies and concepts of operations. The first section brings together essays on the world in conflict in 2022, which are assessments of the challenges facing the liberal democracies as we enter a new historical epoch. The second section focuses on lessons learned from the past being applied in the present. The third section focuses on the allies and their reworking of their approaches to defense. The fourth section highlights selective military innovations, including evolving concepts of operations that the U.S. and allied militaries have entertained or implemented during the year. The fifth section focuses on a specific aspect of this change, namely unmanned systems. The final section addresses the question of future evolution of the global system.
The United States Marine Corps began its modern transformation path after the introduction of the Osprey in 2007. In a series of in-depth interviews with the United States Marines, this analysis highlights the transformation strategy that has made the USMC one of the most dynamic military forces in the world today.. From the land wars to dealing with peer competitor threats and engagements, this book demonstrates how the Marines are navigating the strategic shift to craft innovative solutions for the return of Great Power competition. Only time will tell how the Marine Corps navigates this treacherous transformation journey, but it's not the equipment that will make the Corps successful on the future battlefield - it's the Marines. Lt-Gen George Trautman, USMC (Ret).
Since June 1984, under CNO Study Directive 5223 and subsequent guidance from the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Plans, Policy and Operations, OP-06), the Center for Naval Analyses has been examining current issues and future prospects in the Western Alliance. The aim is to better inform U.S. Navy policy initiatives and long-range planning for the European theater, by helping to define the planning environments, opportunities, and limitations the Navy may have to face in the decade ahead. While affairs of the Alliance are of prominent interest, the examination has not been confined to NATO per se. On the theory that politics among nations begin with politics and related developments within...
Thomas Remington discusses the methods used by the Communist Party to manage communications in Soviet society. Covering literature produced by Soviet scholars from the 1970s and 1980s, that studies the organization, content, usage, and impact of propaganda, Remington views how Party officials intrinsically manage the structure of the Soviet communications system, through rhetoric of both conservatism and reform.
Global defense analyst Robbin Laird brings you, "Defense XXI". This compendium of articles published in 2021 provides an overview of several key trends and themes regarding the evolution of U.S. and allied defense. We have focused on several key developments during the year in the defense domain which will have longer term impacts in the years ahead. During 2021, we visited several U.S. Naval and Marine Corps bases, as well as France and Poland as well as "virtually" Denmark and the United Kingdom. During those visits, we interviewed many senior commanders about how they are focused on shaping a more effective military to deal with the evolving challenges from the authoritarian powers. As former Secretary of the USAF, Michael Wynne commented: "The articles in the book, organized as they are by natural topics, will undoubtedly enhance the reader's understanding as to just how weapons and information technology and the distribution and relationship knowledge have affected and impacted the age old concept that military action is simply an extension of diplomacy by other means."
