Family history and genealogical information about the ancestors of Edna Frances Cady who was born 8 September 1900 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of Frank Clinton Cady and Edith Frances Hesselgrave. Frank was a descendant of Nicholas Cady who was born ca. 1620 in Suffolk, England and died ca. 1710 in Massachusetts. Edith was a descendant of William Hesselgrave who was born ca. 1801 in Yorkshire, England and died ca. 1881 in St. Lawrence Co., New York. Edna Frances Cady married Gerald Henry Gates 19 October 1925. Her ancestors were primarily from New York, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania and England.
George Gates was born in about 1634 in England. He emigrated and was living in Hartford, Connecticut by 1652. He married Sarah Olmstead, daughter of Nicholas Olmstead and Sarah Loomis, in about 1660. They had eight children. He died in 1684. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Connecticut, New York, Ohio and Indiana.

John Mason Gates (1802-1847), was born probably in Massachusetts, and died at Craftsbury, Orleans Co., Vt. He married (1) probably in Chesterfield Twp., Essex Co., N.Y. in 1828 Philena Vanderwarker (1809-1837) born at Northumberland, Saratoga Co., N.Y. She was the daughter of Martin Isaac and Sophia or Sophfizia Chapman Vanderwarker. He married (2) at Craftsbury, Vt. in 1838 Sophia Morse (1808-1842), the daughter of Leonard Morse and his first wife, Polly Grow. Descendants live in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Illinois and elsewhere.

The immigrant ancestor, William Stewart (b. ca. 1738), son of Alexander and Rebecca Galbraith Stewart, was born at the family home on the estates of the Stewarts of Fort Stewart at Green Hill near Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. After his father's death, about 1745, his mother brought him with the other younger children to Donegal, Lancaster Co., Pa. where some Galbraith family members had settled earlier. In 1760 William married Mary Gass (b. ca.1742) at Chambersburg, Pa. William and Mary Gass were very likely first cousins, both being descendants of the Galbraith family of Scotland. William Galbraith Stewart, Jr. (1896-1935), son of William Galbraith Stewart and Josephine Howard, married in Wilkinsburg, Pa. 1928, Leah Jane Keiser (1898-1978), the daughter of John and Hannah Jane Fulton Keiser. She was born in Wall, Allegheny Co., Pa.
