Spitting on a Soldier's Grave

The story of the Irishmen who deserted from the Irish Army to join the Allies in the struggle against fascism and Nazism during the Second World War, has been kept secret for over half a century. These men fought, and sometimes died, in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. And after the war they were all Court Martialed, even the dead. This meticulously researched book tells the story of the men who fought for freedom but were vilified after death. It tells the story of men like Joseph Mullally who died on D-Day, 6 June 1944, fighting with the British Army on the beaches of Normandy, a year before his court-martial. And Stephen McManus who’d already suffered torture and starvation whi...

Robert Widders is one of the very few men to have served in all three branches of the armed services: the Royal Navy, the Army, and the RAF. A Few Deeds Short of a Hero tracks his life from childhood through naval service in the NATO rapid response Atlantic Squadron during the cold war, through Army military manoeuvres in Germany and active service in No4 RAF War Hospital during the Gulf War.Through his life-long service and brief period AWOL, for which he served military imprisonment, he paints a colourful picture of both the boredom and tragedy of war interspersed with the shenanigans of a young man sliding towards alcoholism, and a penchant for feats of physical endurance including runnin...

Forged in Blood and Music

On the 27th of September 1942, 1,816 British prisoners of war embarked upon the Japanese transport ship, Lisbon Maru, to sail to Japan to be used as slave labour in Japanese industry. A week later, over half of them were dead, killed in a calculated act of murder by their Japanese military captors. Over the next two-and-a-half years, many more died as a result of torture, brutality, starvation, overwork, and the withholding of medical treatment. Here is the story of just one of them, Lance Bombardier Joseph Denton, an ordinary man who found the courage and willpower to survive through extraordinary events. Much of Joe Denton's captivity was played out as a volunteer medical orderly in the hos...

The Lisbon Maru Massacre

The war in the Far East was marked by countless examples of courage and self-sacrifice. But it also generated a litany of horrors and massacres, not least amongst them the invasion of Hong Kong by the Imperial Japanese Army which was accompanied by rape, the widescale murder of Chinese civilians, and the massacre of Allied Prisoners of War. But amongst these atrocities, the sinking of the transport ship Lisbon Maru and the deliberate killing of hundreds of unarmed prisoners of war (POWs) stands out even to this day as a shameful act of barbarity. This book, though, is not about the invasion of Hong Kong and its bloody aftermath. Nor is it so much about the sinking of the Lisbon Maru - those stories have been told elsewhere. Rather, it's the authors' attempt to bring some degree of insight and remembrance into the individual lives of the 1,816 men who sailed on that ill-fated vessel.
