Roger has kept a diary for most of his adult life and they make interesting and often poignant reading. He has more than forty hand-written notebooks, two of which have been used for this book. There are entries about day-to-day domestic activities, work, politics, sport and his relationship with his family, in particular of his wife Iris as she was dying from cancer and the care and support she received from the staff at the Royal Marsden Hospital, St Christophers Hospice and Macmillan nurses.

Before she died, Iris Legg wrote about her family and in particular about her life in Pembrokeshire as an evacuee during and after WWII. However, she was unable to complete the task which she had set herself and her husband, Roger, provides an outline of her life from the time she returned to London, together with a pen portrait of a very gifted person. The letters published in this volume are mostly from and about our family, friends and colleagues, letters which reflect our careers, interests and concerns, holidays, happy times and sad times, misfortunes as well as successes. These letters generated many of Roger's memories and some of these are recorded as footnotes. The book concludes with tributes to Roger's parents who played such a central role in their family's life and fortunes.

Highland, Lowland and Island

This book is a record of three of Roger’s long-distance walks in Scotland. The first of these was from Cape Wrath to Knoydart, a route said by many to have the finest coastline in Britain. The second was in South West Scotland, from the Rhinns of Galloway to Iona, a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The third expedition was through the Outer Hebrides—anyone who has studied the map of Britain cannot have failed to have been attracted to the string of islands that constitute the Western Isles. They lie like a defensive barrier for the north Scottish mainland, against the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean. From the lone shieling of the island Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas – Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland, And we in dreams behold the Hebrides. Canadian Boat Song
