"Roman Signer is an artist like no other. Although he identifies himself as a sculptor, he is best known for actions in which simple materials (rockets, balloons, rushing water) react with natural forces to yield surprisingly lyrical results. Part mad scientist, part sorcerer's apprentice, part Buster Keaton, Signer often appears in these actions, sometimes at considerable risk to himself. The real star of his works, however, is time. In works such as Sandbag with Timed Detonator (1988), an auto-destructive device featuring a plastic alarm clock that releases a heavy sandbag hanging above it, two periods of tranquil rest are bridged by an instant of sudden violence. In others the change is m...

Since the early 1970s, Roman Signer has been making art that refuses to be described in conventional terms. His objects and installations look like science experiments, and his photographs and films seem only to document their results: In compliance with carefully planned and strictly executed and documented procedures, Signer sets off explosions and collisions, sending his materials flying through space. Videos like Boot with Rocket capture the original setup, soon to self-destruct. Signer's work gives cause and effect a humorous twist, as it does the scientific method, taking on the self-evidence of scientific logic as an artistic challenge. But in the midst of all this, Signer has also be...

Roman Signer is a wonderfully witty and laconic writer. Only few people know this side of the artist.Published here, for the first time, are talks and conversations in which Signer discusses his youth in the Swiss Appenzell; his student years in Poland, where he met his wife, Aleksandra, and his early and difficult years as an artist. He also discusses his later visits to countries such as Iceland and Japan, both of which he admires and which have influenced his work. Taken as a whole, the texts forn a sort of autobiography.
