The International Political Economy of the Environment

Thirteen contributions from political scientists, sociologists, and other academics represent a critical approach to the IPE of the environment: "an approach that focuses on the historical development and framing of environmental problems and solutions and that seeks to understand the social priorities or purpose that differing problems and solutions reflect" (from the preface). A unifying theme is the idea that the way in which problems are framed intimately impacts the kinds of solutions that are proposed. A sampling of topics: environmental NGOs, TNCs, and the question of governance; environmental discourse and danger in Dominican and Cuban urban watersheds; and global change and the political economy of sustainable development in Brazil. Stalked by Death

Riley Malloy, vet tech and dog whisperer, suspects her father’s death seven years ago was not an accident. The killer waits for an opening to kill Riley. Riley Malloy, vet tech and dog whisperer, is the only person alive who can solve long-ago murders and expose the crimes of an international ring. Complication: Riley doesn’t realize the significance of her grandmother’s letter or the documents she finds or how desperately her unknown enemy watches and waits for the opportunity to destroy the evidence and kill Riley.

Cases of Conflict

Cases of Conflict focuses on times of dispute as important moments in the development of international environmental law. Conflict tests international law—both its content and its relevance become clearer in times of controversy—but conflict can also help shape the law. Drawing from a growing body of scholarship connecting the fields of international relations and international law, Cases of Conflict examines six prominent case studies to demonstrate how transboundary disputes have influenced the development of international environmental law and policy. Embracing their rich detail and real-world messiness, this book looks to develop a better understanding of the true content and potential of international environmental law.

Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) is the relationship between militaries and humanitarians. Largely conducted in post-conflict environments, CIMIC has become a key characteristic of military operations in the twenty-first century. However, the field is mostly understood through stereotype rather than clear, comprehensive analysis. The range and sc

Human security has been advanced as an alternative to traditional state-based conceptualizations of security, yet controversies about the use and abuse of the concept remain. Investigating innovations in the advancement of the human security agenda over the past decade, this book identifies themes and processes around which consensus for future policy action might be built. It considers the ongoing debates regarding the human security agenda, explores prospects and projects for the advancement of human security, addresses issues of human security as emerging forms of new multilateralisms and examines claims that human security is being undermined by US unilateralisms. This comprehensive volume explores the theoretical debate surrounding human security and details the implications for practical application. It will prove ideal for students of international relations, security studies and development studies.

R2P and the US Intervention in Libya

This book argues that the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) the Libyan people played an important role in the U.S.’s decision to act, both in terms of how the language of deliberation was framed and the implementation of the actual intervention once all preventive means had been exhausted. While the initial ethos of the intervention followed international norms, the author argues that as the conflict continued to unfold, the Obama administration’s loss of focus and lack of political will for post-conflict resolution, as well as a wider lack of understanding of ever changing politics on the ground, resulted in Libya’s precipitation into chaos. By examining the cases of Rwanda and Darfur alongside the interventions in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, the book discusses how these cases influenced current decision-making with regards to foreign interventions and offers a triangular framework through which to understand R2P: responsibility to prevent, react and rebuild.

The Environment

An in-depth look at the history of the environment. Is it possible for the economy to grow without the environment being destroyed? Will our lifestyles impoverish the planet for our children and grandchildren? Is the world sick? Can it be healed? Less than a lifetime ago, these questions would have made no sense. This was not because our ancestors had no impact on nature—nor because they were unaware of the serious damage they had done. What people lacked was an idea: a way of imagining the web of interconnection and consequence of which the natural world is made. Without this notion, we didn't have a way to describe the scale and scope of human impact upon nature. This idea was "the envir...

Recent Canadian foreign policy has fixated upon Canada's former status as a middle power within a small club of western, democratic states. The emergence of a US-dominated world and of an integrated North American economy and the decline of multilateral rules and institutions as prime instruments of global governance have left Canadian foreign policy searching for new purpose and direction. From Pride to Influence brings Canadian foreign policy into the twenty-first century by grounding it in a conception of the national interest that accepts the primacy of the United States in guaranteeing Canadian national security and prosperity.

The New World Order

"In The New World Order contributors discuss an alternative value system to that of the market-led corporate global agenda. This system does not directly challenge corporate globalization but operates in parallel with it, creating new possibilities. The authors expose the threats posed by the New World Order and propose a more positive way of dealing with the future." -- BACK COVER.
