Haitian Refugees Forced to Return
On September 30, 1991, Haiti's first democratically elected President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was overthrown by a coup d'etat. The Haitian political crisis, which was marked by intense international pressure for political negotiation, triggered a stream of refugees bound foremost for the United States. The US Coast Guard began detaining interdicted Haitians at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as well as forcibly returning a certain number to the Haitian capital. What was the role played by the Haitian diaspora in the US, as the Haitian crisis unfolded until Aristide's reinstatement in October 1994? This study investigates how this process of intervention was shaped by socially constructed categories such as nation, race, ethnicity, and class.
Nations Unbound
Nations Unbound is a pioneering study of an increasing trend in migration-transnationalism. Immigrants are no longer rooted in one location. By building transnational social networks, economic alliances and political ideologies, they are able to cross the geographic and cultural boundaries of both their countries of origin and of settlement. Through ethnographic studies of immigrant populations, the authors demonstrate that transnationalism is something other than expanded nationalism. By placing immigrants in a limbo between settler and visitor, transnationalism challenges the concepts of citizenship and of nationhood itself.

Immigrants and the Formation of Community
"The United States has experienced, since the mid-60's, a new wave of immigration comparable in importance to the mass migration of the turn of the century. It is a significant population influx which, as its predecessor, will shape the character of the country in the future. However, the more recent arrivals are very different from the "huddled masses" who came to this country in the early part of this century and the society receiving them has also undergone significant transformations. Yet, images of immigrants and the concepts used to evoke their encounter with the new environment have remained very much the same. The present work attempts to provide a different approach to the study of the immigrants' response to this encounter by looking at their process of transformation from immigrants to ethnics."--Introduction.
Haitians
In 1981 I was asked by some DePauw University students to serve as faculty adviser for a group planning to work in rural Haiti during the nearly month-long interim term. I accepted the offer for several reasons. I had enjoyed being the faculty adviser for two previous work projects in Guatemala and Jamaica. I had found the experience was educationally valuable for undergraduates, and I could use it to enhance classroom learning during the semester. In addition, the experience of living and working in a radically different environment was intellectually stimulating for me as a social scientist interested in welfare economics. Finally, because such volunteer projects were rare in the early 1980s, I realized the opportunity should not be passed up. It was a chance to see a part of the world I had heard of but knew little or nothing about except from accounts found in newspaper and magazine articles.
The German Community in Winnipeg
This study applies the community model to examine German life in Winnipeg from its beginnings to the end of World War I. Emphasis is on the organizational and territorial dimensions of the community, with stress on residential patterns and the growth of local German institutions. These are examined with reference to the network of influences affecting their development.
