One of the characteristics of poetry is that it has a unique way of conveying ideas, creating mental images, provoking thought, emotional connection, and portraying experiences in human life. I love poetry because it allows me to share my feelings and emotions in poetic form. The 1960's were very hard times of going without and learning how to survive. They were times of eating food that was cooked on top of a pot-bellied stove during the hard winter months. Mary Evans Ridley was a hard working, stay at home mom that lived a life filled with violence, torment, and shame. From a marriage that was destined for destruction, six children were born. Mary fights frantically to protect her children from her violent husband, but the effects of raising children in an unhealthy environment ultimately produced catastrophic results. The tragic death of both sons and the abusive relationships that her four daughters endured was the result of family violence. Rosemary, the youngest child, seemed to pattern her life by learned behavior. Responding to men that had similar traits such as her dad's only caused her to retreat even deeper into a dark pattern of hopelessness and despair- and into the corridors of a mind filled with fear, confusion, and anxiety.
