The World's First Full Press Freedom

The book charts an extraordinary period in Danish history: the "Press Freedom Period" of 1770-73, in which King Christian 7's physician J.F. Struensee introduced a series of radical enlightenment reforms beginning with the total abolishment of censorship. The book investigates the sudden avalanche of pamphlets and debates, initiating the modern public sphere of Denmark-Norway. Publications show a surprising variety, from serious political, economic, and philosophical treatises over criticism, polemics, ridicule, entertainment, and to spin campaigns, obscenities, libel, threats. A successful coup against Struensee led to his subsequent public execution in Copenhagen, and the latter half of th...

Driving down a dirt track one day photographer, stylist and adventurer Kara Rosenlund came across a beautiful but dilapidated farmhouse. Its lonely, worn loveliness kindled a passion in Kara to photograph and celebrate Australia's authentic, intriguing rural homes and the people who live in them. As she travelled the country, documenting raw and real interiors and landscapes, she found shelter - under the roofs of beach shacks, grand homesteads, sheep stations and shipping containers, and in the welcome of strangers.

Ballads of the North, Medieval to Modern

This volume is intended as a belated but heartfelt thank-you and Gedenkschrift to the late Larry Syndergaard (1936-2015), long-time professor of English at Western Michigan University and Fellow of the Kommission für Volksdichtung (International Ballad Commission). Larry’s contributions down the decades to ballad studies--particularly Scandinavian and Anglophone--included dozens of papers and articles, as well as his supremely useful book, English Translations of the Scandinavian Medieval Ballads. As David Atkinson and Thomas A. McKean of the Kommission have written (May 2015): “Larry... was a sound scholar with a penetrating mind which he used to support, encourage and befriend others,...

For years, photographer and stylist Kara Rosenlund's passion was searching for a shack where the bush met the beach. When she found an original 70s A-frame weekender on an island off the east coast of Australia, weekends took on a new meaning. Nesting in this house deepened her appreciation for simple pleasures and showed her the value of carving out time to really make the most of Saturdays and Sundays. In this personal guide to enjoying the power of weekends, Kara invites us into her A-frame. She shares the interiors of her home and reveals her styling philosophy with helpful tips for composing a vignette. She guides us through her photographic process and shows us how we too can develop an artist's eye with the camera. She also celebrates the delight in making the perfect prawn sandwich and how to appreciate the simple act of line drying laundry. Kara Rosenlund is known for her nostalgic take on iconic Australia. This is a personal book dedicated to the quintessential spirit of summer weekends in Australia and how we can best enjoy them through interiors, food and nature.

Lived Institutions as History of Experience

Lived Institutions as History of Experience

This open access book focuses on institutions that were produced and formed by the emerging welfare state. How were institutions experienced by the people who interacted with them? How did institutions as sites of experience shape and structure people’s everyday lives? Histories of institutions have mainly focused on the structures and power relations produced by institutional settings. Likewise, despite an extensive historiography of the welfare state, reflections on individuals’ experiences of welfare are few. By using ‘lived institutions’ as its conceptual frame, this edited collection merges the fields of institutional studies, the history of the welfare state – and the novel and vibrant field of the history of experience.

Deep in the Amazon lies the solution to the global energy crisis - a mysterious source of power that will end our dependency on oil. It's not the only discovery. When entomologist Rebecca Riley receives a series of strange photographs from expedition leader and former partner, Ed Reardon, she finds herself heading to Brazil to join the team of scientists assembling there. She hasn’t seen Ed for more than a year, and their relationship hadn’t ended well. But his revelation is impossible to ignore. What she uncovers is beyond imagination: strange statues in the jungle… a ruined city built by the refugees of a lost Pacific continent… and a terrifying new species. She knows this is no ordinary animal. When the team is attacked, the mission becomes a desperate race for survival, and Rebecca must confront a crippling childhood phobia she'd thought long dead and buried. An ancient enemy has awakened, one whose very existence has implications for all of humankind... and the planet itself. TERROR HAS A NEW SPECIES.
