Provides a detailed picture of the numbers, needs and circumstances of visually handicapped people, based on the first ever survey of this kind in Great Britain. Their special needs with regard to mobility, shopping, reading, transport, housing and employment are described, and the survey gives the first reliable estimates of the numbers of people who are so visually impaired as to be registrable as blind or partially sighted. Many of these people are not in fact registered, and do not therefore have access to the specialist services available. The findings offer a major challenge to all who provide services to disabled people.
Based on practical knowledge of building, converting and operating a wide range of premises used by people with some form of visual impairment, this text is intended to fill a gap in the range of literature available on this subject.
Presenting the findings of the first ever nationwide survey of blind and partially sighted children in Britain, this survey took the form of detailed interviews with the parents of 285 visually impaired children aged three to 19 years. Volume 1 of the survey which dealt with adults was published in 1991. The findings provide an insight into the lives of families with a visually impaired child and the struggle they have to obtain information and advice about their child's condition. One of the findings to emerge is that more than half of these children have one or more additional disabilities such as impaired hearing or speech, physical handicaps or learning difficulties.
