Dr. Hans-Peter Schmid has addressed in this monograph the basic dilemmas surrounding prostate cancer. These dilemmas include the 40 % histologic incidence of invasive cancer in men in comparison to a 3 % death rate, the extraordinary slow doubling time of four to five years for untreated early clinical stages (T1 and T2 cancers), the limited life span of even healthy men over 70 years of age, and the national and international debates of how to treat this cancer. It is important, however, to recognize that despite these uncertainties, prostate cancer is probably the most predictive of all human solid tumors. Dr. Schmid has addressed the basis for much of this predictability in this monograph...

Abdominal and retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare tumors originating from connective tissues in the body like muscle, fat, fibrous tissue, and blood vessels. Surgery is the primary treatment option for these tumors, and complete surgical resection is the only potential cure. Typically, these tumors can be large at detection, and the management of abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors can be difficult. In addition to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and new target therapies are the applied treatment modalities. The surgical management of abdominal and retroperitoneal sarcoma is evolving. In this special issue we want to highlight advances in the surgical management of abdominal and retroperitoneal sarcomas, including new surgical technology, minimal invasive surgery, and personalized surgery. Furthermore, we would like to address controversies in the surgical management of abdominal and retroperitoneal surgery, including, aggressive surgical approaches, compartment resection, resection of disseminated tumors, resection of recurrent disease, and the value of (neo)adjuvant chemo- and radiation therapy.
With sweeping revisions throughout, the new edition of Urologic Surgical Pathology equips you to accurately diagnose specimens of the entire urinary tract and male reproductive system plus the adrenal glands. Comprehensive in scope, this title begins with a look at normal anatomy and histology for each organ system...followed by discussions of the pathology of congenital anomalies, inflammations, non-neoplastic diseases and neoplasia. Practical guidance in daily urological pathology sign-out and the latest recommended diagnostic approaches — with an emphasis on clinicopathologic and radiographic-pathologic correlations — makes this a true diagnostic decision-making medical reference. A c...
Deep learning techniques have been shown to successfully address many medical image technical problems, e.g., segmentation, lesion detection, image registration, etc., better than ever. Accordingly, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medicine is continuously booming in these years for the attempt to improve various image-related medical procedures and workflows. The applications aim to improve the workup of image diagnosis, optimize the imaging workflow, offload the tedious medical tasks, and provide richer and more holistic cues for treatment planning. Specific prominent applications may range from lesion detections like pulmonary nodules and breast lesions, can...
This book provides information on testosterone and other androgens, and their role in human physiology and pathology. It covers biosynthesis and mechanisms of action and reviews their effects on brain and behaviour, spermatogenesis, hair growth, bones, muscles, erythropoiesis, the cardiovascular system and lipids, erection, and the prostate. Therapeutic uses of testosterone preparations are carefully evaluated, including use in women, the aging male, and its abuse and detection in sport. The book reviews applications in male contraception, the role of 5a-reductase inhibitors and the controversial use of DHEA. For this book the editors have assembled the world leaders in testosterone research and clinical andrology and endocrinology. A special feature of the book is the fact that its 24 chapters were submitted simultaneously to insure rapid publication. This revised and significantly expanded edition will serve as the standard source of reference for many years.
Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the Serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. Now, new discoveries have proved that several of the vitamins function as hormones and many of the substances inferred by the title of the Serial function in signal transduction processes. Accordingly, the Editor-in-Chief has expanded the scope of the Serial to reflect this newer understanding of function- structure relationships in cellular communication. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Volume 55 of Vitamins and Hormones covers steroid hormone action, and includes two additional contributions on calcium and on peptide hormones.
