Drug Design, Volume II covers the design of bioactive compounds interacting with enzymes and playing a role in enzyme synthesis. The book discusses the modulation of pharmacokinetics by molecular manipulation; the factors in the design of reversible and irreversible enzyme inhibitors; and the design of organophosphate and carbamate inhibitors of cholinesterases. The text also describes the design of reactivators for irreversibly blocked acetylcholinesterase; drug design based on the inhibition of protein synthesis in the context of susceptible enzymic reactions; as well as the role of enzymes and their synthesis as a target for antibiotic action. The rational design of antiviral agents; the design of penicillin; the design of peptide hormone analogs; as well as the advances in the design of diuretics are also considered. The book further tackles the design of biologically active steroids; the rational elements in the development of superior neuromuscular blocking agents; and the design of tumor-inhibitory alkylating drugs. Pharmacologists, chemists, and people involved in drug design will find the book invaluable.

The Perennial Satirist

This collection of essays primarily honours Bernfried Nugel the teacher and scholar, but it also pays homage to Bernfried Nugel the indefatigable worker in the cause of Aldous Huxley studies. It is due to this latter manifestation that many of the contributors to this volume know each other personally, having met at one or more of the international conferences that Professor Nugel organized and either hosted or co-hosted. At Munster, his home university, he has also been instrumental in establishing and heading a center for admirers of Huxley's work, along with a fine library of Huxley materials, including manuscripts and numerous first editions. Eleven years have elapsed since the appearance of the first Volume and it is with great pleasure that the Editor is now able to present Volume 14. During these eleven years various fields of drug research have undergone important, partly revolutionary, changes. A number of these have already been dealt with, so that the series PROGRESS IN DRUG RESEARCH contains a comprehensive review of a substantial part of our current knowledge. The Editor is particularly grateful for the opportunity of transmitting to those connected with the development of drugs the extensive knowledge of the Authors, who, without exception, are themselves actively engaged in research. Drug research is currently in a sta...

Immunochemistry of Proteins

The structural features responsible for the immunogenicity of certain parts of native protein molecules have been of interest to immunochemists and protein chemists for over three decades. Following the early work of Land steiner in 1942, which showed that peptide fragments from silk fibroin exhibited an inhibitory activity toward the reaction of the protein with its antibodies, fragments from many other protein systems have been isolated and studied. However, no concerted effort was (or could be) devoted to the elucidation of the complete antigenic structure of a protein. In order for these endeavors to be successful and meaningful, knowledge of both the amino acid sequence and the detailed...

Nonelliptic Partial Differential Equations

Nonelliptic Partial Differential Equations

This book provides a very readable description of a technique, developed by the author years ago but as current as ever, for proving that solutions to certain (non-elliptic) partial differential equations only have real analytic solutions when the data are real analytic (locally). The technique is completely elementary but relies on a construction, a kind of a non-commutative power series, to localize the analysis of high powers of derivatives in the so-called bad direction. It is hoped that this work will permit a far greater audience of researchers to come to a deep understanding of this technique and its power and flexibility.
