In August/September 2001, a group of 75 physicists from 51 laboratories in 15 countries met in Erice, Italy to participate in the 39th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. This volume constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the theoretical and phenomenological developments in string theory, as well as in all the other sectors of subnuclear physics. In addition, experimental highlights are presented and discussed.
A comprehensive survey of the most recent results from the field of quark-gluon structure of the nucleon, in particular how the spin of the nucleon is shared by its constituents. After very intriguing results from CERN and SLAC at the end of the 1980s, the last decade has seen a set of second-generation experiments at high energy accelerators that have yielded precise information on the solution of the 'Spin Crisis' - as well as opening up new questions. The articles are written by experts from the leading collaboration and theory groups as well as providing an expert summary of the state of the art, the book points the way to future research directions. Its main focus is on semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements of deep inelastic lepton scattering, which enables for the first time the determination of the flavor-separated quark spin distributions. Future developments on generalized parton distributions and their interpretation as well as the transverse spin structure are also covered. An indispensable volume for all working in hadronic physics.

This textbook combines in a unique concept the design and construction of radial and axial fans with the problem of noise generation as well as its mitigation already in the fan development stage. The aim is to describe selected, easily applicable methods of aerodynamic design and noise prediction and to demonstrate their physical principles. Exercises with solutions facilitate understanding. The completely revised and expanded edition now also includes guidance on selecting fans for a given task, simulation-based optimization methods for fan design, and psychoacoustic methods that can be used to measure the quality of fan noise. This book is a translation of the original German 4th edition ...

English summary: "Pruzzenland" is a region in north-eastern Europe which has historically been influenced by a diverse range of cultural and multi-ethnic traditions and found itself the subject of competing territorial claims made by Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Russia. The alterations to national borders and the almost wholesale change in the region's population in the aftermath of the Second World War were doubtless the most profound ruptures and transformations faced by the area. In recent times, issues around remembering and coming to terms with the past have become crucial resources in the search for regional identity in Poland, Lithuania and Russia. This book, spanning the twentieth ...
