DNA: Recombination, Interactions and Repair presents the result of the proceedings of the FEBS Symposium on DNA, which focuses on DNA recombination in vivo and in vitro, DNA interactions, and DNA repair. This book presents problems involving topics on DNA that have been studied intensively using methodological approaches and developed techniques for cloning, physical mapping, and sequencing of DNA. This text also notes that this approach has provided a basis for further genetic studies at the molecular level. The problems related to the genetic complexity of higher organisms and the relationships between the structure of genetic material and the regulation of expression of genetic information, as well as genetic engineering of micro-organisms, which become amenable to experimental investigation, are also presented in this text. This book notes that these problems are closely associated with endeavors to understand the molecular foundations of living processes to create a rational basis for treating genetic and viral diseases. This text will be a valuable source of information for students studying in the field of genetics, especially those conducting extensive research on DNA.

Structural genomics is the study of the DNA of living organisms. Evolutionary genomics is the study of the history of the genome. These subjects are closely interlinked. They are approached in this book using as a guideline the investigations carried out in the author's laboratory, relevant literature is critically reviewed and some general conclusions are presented. The author and his collaborators have studied a vast number of genomes, ranging from prokaryotes to human, using different approaches, including physical chemistry of DNA, viral integration and molecular cytogenetics. As the subtitle indicates the book discusses the fundamental importance of natural selection in shaping genomes. In terms of numbers, neutral and nearly neutral mutations represent most mutations, but a "regional" control is exerted by natural selection (essentially negative or purifying selection). A "neo-selectionist" model is proposed for genome evolution.· Summarizes the existing knowledge on genome organization and evolution in a self-containedbook· Discusses important open problem, without refraining from criticism wheneverappropriate

The green alga Chlamydomonas is widely used as an experimental model system for studies in cellular and molecular biology, and in particular plant molecular biology. This book is the only single modern compendium of information on its biology and in particular its molecular biology and genetics. Included in addition to much information on the basic biology is material of a very practical nature, namely, methods for culture, preservation of cultures, preparation of media, lists of inhibitors and other additives to culture media, help with common laboratory problems such as contamination, student demonstrations, and properties of particular strains and mutants. Casual users as well as speciali...

Biotechnology for Agro-Industrial Residues Utilisation

Residues from agriculture and the food industry consist of many and varied wastes, in total accounting for over 250 million tonnes of waste per year in the UK alone. Biotechnological processing of these residues would allow these waste products to be used as a resource, with tremendous potential. An extensive range of valuable and usable products can be recovered from what was previously considered waste: including fuels, feeds and pharmaceutical products. In this way Biotechnology can offer many viable alternatives to the disposal of agricultural waste, producing several new products in the process. This book presents up-to-date information on a biotechnology approach for the utilisation of...

Advances in Solid State Fermentation

G.HAINNAUX Departement Milieu et Activites Agricoles, Centre ORSTOM, 911 Avenue d' Agropolis, B.P. 5045, 34032 Montpellier Cedex , France. Solid state fermentation, popularly abbreviated as SSF, is currently investigated by many groups throughout the world. The study of this technique was largely neglected in the past in European and Western countries and there is now a high demand for SSF, meaning in food, environment, agricultural, phannaceutical and many other biotechnological applications. It gives me satisfaction to note that the importance of this technique was realised at my department way back in 1975 since then, our team has put concentrated efforts on developing this technique. xvi...
