Migrant Smuggling: Illegal Migration and Organised Crime in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region
The subject of this volume is the phenomenon commonly known as 'migrant smuggling' - the criminal offence of illegally transporting migrants across international borders. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of migrant smuggling in Australia and the Asia Pacific region in its different aspects and dimensions. It examines the nature characteristics and magnitude, the causes, conditions and consequences of migrant smuggling, and the inadequacies of existing policies and legislation. It compiles, reviews and analyses existing and proposed legislation at national, regional and international levels. It forwards a set of specific proposals that can be woven into a coherent and comprehensve strategy to prevent and combat illegal migration and organised crime in Australia and the Asia Pacific region more effectively in the 21st century.
Global Organized Crime

Palermo in the Pacific
This study identifies and analyses organised crime legislation in the Asia Pacific region. It examines offences criminalising the participation in criminal organisations and equivalent provisions penalising the existence and operation of organised crime under domestic laws. The study also explores the adoption of relevant international treaties, in particular the Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, and examines efforts by the international community to promote wider implementation of this Convention in the region. The aim of this study is to assess the adequacy and efficiency of the existing provisions under domestic and international laws, and to develop recommendations for law reform to prevent and suppress organised crime more effectively in the region.
Reporting on Organised Crime
This book is the outcome of a six-month research contract undertaken by Ghent University's Research Group Drug Policy, Criminal Policy and International Crime for the Belgian Minister of Justice. Since 1996 the Belgian Government has produced Annual Reports on Organised Crime, and while currently this takes the form of a typically descriptive situation report there has always been the intention to further develop the methodology underwriting the report.
