Reservoir Sediment Management
Siltation in reservoirs has become an important problem when dams are getting older and stop functioning when the sediment has accumulated to a certain extent. With proper sediment management techniques, negative effects of sediment can be avoided and reservoir life and performance can be improved. This volume deals with reservoir sedimentation, deposition and removal. It provides the principles of sediment transport and gives guidelines to predict reservoir life. It presents several removal techniques, accompanied with detailed operation descriptions. With the help of the RESCON open source software, cost analysis tools to determine the optimum method for maintenance and operation of a reservoir can be applied. To illustrate practice and to assist the reader in setting up a sediment management operation, a number of case studies of existing large dams are included. Turkey’s Water Diplomacy
‘Turkey’s Water Diplomacy’ delineates the institutional and legal foundations of transboundary water policy-making in Turkey, paying special attention to the evolution of transboundary water politics in the Euphrates–Tigris river basin. The book also analyses how Turkey’s harmonization with the European Union has impacted the transboundary water policy discourses and practices, and how these changes have been reflected in its relations with its Middle Eastern neighbours. Turkey was one of the three countries that rejected the UN Watercourses Convention in 1997. Yet, since the voting of the convention there have been changes in Turkey’s stance vis-à- vis international water law, which the book studies. Turkey’s water diplomacy embodies complex water management problems, which can be best understood as a product of competition, feedback and interconnection among natural and societal variables in a political context. Hence, the book adopts the Water Diplomacy Framework with its key elements in making policy-relevant recommendations specifically for Turkey’s water diplomacy.
Wasserproblematik im Kontext regionaler Stabilitätsrisiken
Julia Bar untersucht die Korrelation zwischen der kooperationsverhindernden Politikformulierung der Anrainerstaaten hinsichtlich der Wassernutzung der internationalen Flusssysteme Amu Darja/Syr Darja und Tigris/Euphrat einerseits und dem existierenden regionalen Konfliktkonglomerat andererseits. Mithilfe einer qualitativ vergleichenden Analyse evaluiert sie die Kontextvariablen und Einflussfaktoren, die das Etablieren eines nachhaltigen grenzüberschreitenden Wassermanagements und damit die Beilegung der andauernden wasserbezogenen Nutzungskonflikte in den beiden Regionen verhindern. Die Autorin zeigt, wie ein nachhaltiges Wassermanagement dort entstehen kann und welche internen und externen Voraussetzungen dafür zu erfüllen sind.
Internationales Planungsrecht
Dominik J. Snjka unternimmt eine Erkundungsreise auf der Suche nach einem internationalen Planungsrecht oder Planungsvolkerrecht. Grundlegend unterscheidet er dabei zwischen zwei denkbaren Funktionen des Volkerrechts, das einerseits den rechtlichen Rahmen hoheitlicher raumlicher Planung bildet und andererseits selbst zum Instrument hoheitlicher Planung werden kann. Im letzten Teil werden bestehende Ansatze zu einer Raumplanung durch Volkerrecht untersucht, namentlich grenzuberschreitende Infrastrukturen und Schutzgebiete sowie raumliche Planungen durch internationale Organisationen.
