This two-volume Cree dictionary documents the Cree language. It provides both a guide to its spoken form for non-speakers and a guide to its written forms (both SRO and Syllabics) for speakers and non-speakers alike. The goal has thus been to collect the vocabulary of Cree as it is spoken by fluent speakers in much of western Canada, whether elders or young people. The words recorded herein have been gathered from diverse sources, including elicitation, recorded conversations and narrative, and publications of many kinds.
The Book of Cabolek
This critical edition of the Serat Cabolèk includes an Introduction, an English translation of the text, and notes. The Introduction gives a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolèk to be found in the Jakarta Museum Library, the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia, and the University of Leiden library. The eleven MSS and the printed version of the Serat Cabolèk are compared with one another on the points of form, structure, and content. The author concludes that they all share a common core and all derive from a single source. The Introduction also provides information of the career of the author of the Serat Cabolèk, Kyahi Yasadipura I (1749-1788), as the founder of Javanese literature at the time of the early kingdom of Surakarta. This is followed by a summary of the contents of the text. The author also discusses the significance of the Serat Cabolèk as a document portraying certain tensions in Javanese religious life. Finally, the author analyses the ethical and mystical teachings of the Dewa Ruci story.
Words of Ecstasy in Sufism
This is the first in-depth study in English of the import and impact of ecstatic utterances (shathiyat) in classical Islamic mysticism. It makes available an important body of mystical aphorisms and reveals not only the significance of these sayings in the Sufi tradition, but also explains their controversial impact on Islamic law and society. This study descrives the development and interpretation of shathiyat in classical Sufism and analyzes the principal themes and rhetorical styles of these sayings, using as a basis the authoritative Commentary on Ecstatic Sayings by Ruzbihan Baqli of Shiraz. The special topic of mystical faith and infidelity receives particular emphasis as a type of ecstatic expression that self-reflectively meditates on the inadequacy of language to describe mystical experience. The social impact of ecstatic sayings is clarified by an analysis of the political causes of Sufi heresy trials (Nuri, Hallaj, and 'Ayn al-Qudat) and the later elaboration of Sufi martyrologies. This study also examines the attitudes of Islamic legal scholars toward shathiyat, and concludes with a comparison of Sufi ecstatic expressions with other types of inspired speech.
