The Euro-Mediterranean Migration System
The Euro-Mediterranean region can be seen as the focal point for movements between south and north. Starting with this observation, the author addresses the migration problems of the countries on the northern shore of the Mediterranean and the immigration countries of the European Union, which recruit labour from the southern shore (for example, Moroccans working in France, Belgium and Great Britain, Turks in Germany, France, Benelux and Scandinavia, Algerians in France and Tunisians in France and Italy). He also deals with the new immigration countries on the northern shore (Spain, Italy and Greece), as well as the emigration and transit countries of the southern and eastern shores. This work is intended to provide the reader with a critical overview of the existing literature on the theme of "co-development" based on sources in various languages, highlighting matters likely to form part of needs of both immigration countries and countries of origin, and taking account of the questions raised by the experts.

Australia, Canada, and Ireland are all engaged in questions of multiculturalism and in the politics of recognition and reconciliation, the opportunities and pressures of geographic regionalism, shifts in political agendas associated with the impact of neo-liberalism, and moves to frame political agendas less at the macro-level of state intervention and more at the level of community partnership and empowerment. Redemption and Utopia
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, there appeared in Central Europe a generation of Jewish intellectuals whose work was to transform modern culture. Drawing at once on the traditions of German Romanticism and Jewish messianism, their thought was organized around the cabalistic idea of the "tikkoun": redemption. Redemption and Utopia uses the concept of "elective affinity" to explain the surprising community of spirit that existed between redemptive messianic religious thought and the wide variety of radical secular utopian beliefs held by this important group of intellectuals. The author outlines the circumstances that produced this unusual combination of religious and non-religious thought and illuminates the common assumptions that united such seemingly disparate figures as Martin Buber, Franz Kafka, Walter Benjamin and Georg Lukcs.
