The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes is the first original legal instrument of its kind adopted by the World Health Organization, in cooperation with UNICEF. This volume is a thorough analysis of the provisions of the international code, and gives a detailed account of its history. The aim of the International Code and its material scope and definitions and certain known marketing practices to promote the use of breast-milk substitutes are described, as well as its i...

A new era began in Iraq in 2003, with an open market economy. A new Law of Investment was adopted in 2006, which aims at the promotion and encouragement of investment, by liberalising it and opening it to foreign investors. It offers generous incentives and guarantees to investors, and a very wide scope for investment in Iraq, where there are tremendous opportunities in many sectors of the economy. The book is intended to provide guidance and help to would-be investors, their legal advisers, lawyers and practitioners interested in the field of investment in Iraq. This work also provides useful guidance on the licensing system and the settlement of disputes.

Robbie

Robbie Jennings came from Idle, an industrial village in Yorkshire; but he was never an idle man. His career was a ‘story of the unforeseeable, even improbable, advance to high position and worldwide reputation of a straightforward man of simple origins’ (from his entry in the ODNB by Sir Franklin Berman). Robbie achieved this eminence through academic success, experience abroad, service in military intelligence, years of teaching at Cambridge and the Inns of Court, and as counsel in major international border disputes. Included in this book are many passages of his own writings: his entertaining and perceptive observations on his travels, and many comments on legal problems. He is remembered by former pupils and colleagues from around the world for his wisdom, humanity and humour. His private passions were for the Lake District, for music, cricket and animals; and above all, for his family. Written by Robbie’s wife and close companion for half a century, this book provides for the general reader some idea of the scope and effectiveness of international law, with Robbie’s own comments on its continuous development.

Global Pandemics and International Law

  • Categories: Law

This book reviews the efficacy of Global Health Law, assessing why its legal framework based on the International Health Regulations did not represent a valid tool in the containment of modern global pandemics such as COVID-19. The book provides an introduction to the international legal framework surrounding epidemics and pandemics and the main global governance issues that have been generated by the COVID-19 outbreak. It highlights the main shortcomings of Global Health Law, while also including practical proposals to improve the WHO’s mechanism to prevent and respond to future disease outbreaks, such as the New Pandemic Treaty. Emphasis is placed on what has not worked in the internatio...

This work presents the broad lines of the action and evolution of the World Health Organization (WHO). It identifies some of the problems WHO has had to face in the past, and will have to confront in the future. It discusses in detail the historical origins, WHO's objectives and the evolution of its strategy and programmes. It reviews its structures as well as the problems raised by its decentralization. It examines the Organization's action in the field of technical cooperation and looks into several of WHO's more important past and present programmes. In its general conclusion, it attempts to envisage the future of the Organization. The present study is based essentially on the official documentation of the WHO, open and restricted. The strength of this book lies in the personal experience of the main author, a former WHO official, who has orientated the book's research in specific directions and has added some complementary information.

The Resolution of Inter-State Disputes in Civil Aviation

  • Categories: Law

"This book investigates dispute resolution mechanisms in international civil aviation, with a primary focus on the functions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council. The Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention) has laid the foundation for dispute resolution mechanisms in international civil aviation, which led to the creation of ICAO. However, economic regulations have been left out from the Chicago Convention. Over the years there has been a proliferation of bilateral air services agreements (ASAs) and the multiplication of multilateral treaties. With the advancement of the aviation technology, this book considers whether dispute resolution mec...
