In 1978 Edwin T. Jaynes and Myron Tribus initiated a series of workshops to exchange ideas and recent developments in technical aspects and applications of Bayesian probability theory. The first workshop was held at the University of Wyoming in 1981 organized by C.R. Smith and W.T. Grandy. Due to its success, the workshop was held annually during the last 18 years. Over the years, the emphasis of the workshop shifted gradually from fundamental concepts of Bayesian probability theory to increasingly realistic and challenging applications. Based on a symposium on lasers, molecules, and methods held at the Los Alamos Center for Nonlinear Studies held in July 1986. This volume contains the lectures and communications presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Atomic and Molecular Processes with Short Intense Laser Pulses" (NATO ARW 848/86). The workshop was held at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Que, Canada, July 19-24, 1987, under the directorship of Prof. A.D. Bandrauk, Universite de Sherbrooke. A scientific committee made up of Dr. P. Corkum (Laser Physics, ~ational Research Council of Canada), Dr. P. Hackett (Laser Chemistry, National Research Council of Canada), Prof. S.C. Wallace (Dept. of Chemistry and Physics, University of Toronto), and Prof. F.H.M. Faisal (FakultHt fUr Physik, UniversitHt Bellefeld) was called upon to invite and organize eminent lectures in the fields of i) Coherence Phenomena in Atomic and Molecular Photoprocesses. ii) High Intensity Atomic and Molecular Phenomena. iii) Laser Chemistry The aim of the workshop was to bring together chemists and physicists in order to~iscuss and analyze the progress made in the use of short in tense laser pulses in understanding coherence phenomena and high intensity, nonlin~adiative effects in atomic and molecular systems.
The conference promotes the theoretical and methodological development of crystallographic investigations of aperiodic crystals including modulated structures, polytypes, incommensurate misfit or composite crystals and quasi crystals. It also promotes scientific interchange among groups working in the various fields of aperiodic materials. Special emphasis will be given to multidisciplinary aspects of aperiodicity.
This meeting on Hadron Spectroscopy and the Confinement Problem took place from June 27 to July 8, 1995. The first four days were at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London and the last six at the University College of Swansea, Wales. The reason for the split sites was a question of accomodating the 54 students and 12 lecturers. However, it was enjoyed by all concerned, providing the opportunity to sample the nightlife of London one week and enjoy the delightful coastal area around Swansea the following week. The meeting immediately preceded the Hadron '95 conference in Manchester. The contents of this volume run roughly parallel to the order of the lectures. Martin Faessler's brief and that of Madjid Boutemeur was to review experimental tech niques as well as physics results. We have tried to review all the areas which are currently active experimentally. This means mostly Light Meson Spectroscopy. However, Simon Capstick gave us a welcome review of Baryon Spectroscopy and the coming CEBAF program. This is an opportunity to thank NATO for their generous financial support, and also the two host institutions for excellent coordination and an enjoyable stay.
