This book analyzes the problems that arise when women's rights conflict with the views of conservative organized religion. Specifically, it addresses the legalization - or lack thereof - of divorce and abortion in three recently democratized Catholic countries: Spain, Chile, and Argentina. Offering a vital and timely contribution to political debates on democratic consolidation, social policy, gender, politics and religion, it challenges many of the accepted assumptions and conclusions in these fields, arguing that to understand the political dynamics and policy trajectories on these issues we must first analyze the distribution of both economic and political power. Merike Blofield moves the...

English Abstract: This article analyzes the contracting and construction process of the Cauca Railroad in the period between 1872 and 1907, with the objective of studying how these contracts were developed and show the asymmetry in the negotiations processes between national and regional governments and sources of capital and other governments, by discussing signed incomplete contracts and the existence of large information and negotiation capacity asymmetries. Due to this, this railroad has the highest construction costs of the period and one of the lowest construction averages of the 19th century, for a railway that was considered fundamental for the economic development of the country.

When the Romance Ended

The unanticipated arrest of General Augusto Pinochet in London on October 16, 1998 served to punctuate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the most cataclysmic event in Chilean history—a violent coup d'etat that abruptly ended decades of democratic rule. A steadily increasing series of explorations, interviews, and images in the popular press and media has begun to unearth the horrors of the dictatorship and its defenders and to reevaluate the stories of the democratically elected Allendists the coup had brutally purged. Based on interviews and analysis of a generation of young leaders of the Chilean political elite who came to power with Allende's election in 1970, When the Romance Ended focu...

The Politics of Memory in Post-Authoritarian Transitions, Volume One

History is a powerful tool in the hands of politicians, and can be a destructive weapon since power over the past is the power to decide who is a hero and who is a traitor. Tradition, the memory of ancestors, and the experience of previous generations are the keys that unlock the door to citizens’ minds, and allow certain ideas, visions and political programs to flourish. However, can history be a proper political weapon during democratisation processes when the past is clearly separated from the present? Are the new order and society founded on the basis of some interpretation of the past, or, rather, are they founded only with reference to the imagined future of the nation? This book exp...

English Abstract: The construction and operation of the Panama Railroad was one of the most successful processes of foreign investment in Latin America during the nineteenth century. This railway, built to overcome the difficulties of navigation between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, makes evident the deployment of the Monroe Doctrine in Latin America and the Caribbean, the relationship between the interests of localities and international powers, and how the concept of nation was defined in the nineteenth century.

Law as Passion

Inspired by the works of Professor Marcelo Neves, in this book colleagues come together to explore how their research has been influenced by non-European and post-colonial approaches. With a foreword by Karl-Heinz Ladeur, it features essays written by leading scholars in the fields of sociology of law and constitutional theory – including Hauke Brunkhorst, Darío Rodrígues, Kimmo Nuotio and Pablo Holmes. The content is divided into four sections, the first of which, “Law, State, and Global Crisis,” covers topics related to the modern constitutional state, the crisis of global capitalism, and the global rule of law. The second, “Symbolic Constitutionalization,” analyzes challenges ...

The Resilient Apocalypse

Portraits of good battling evil in the geography of hell come in many forms in the Hispanic World. Apocalyptic nightmares, frightful images of chaos and death are inclusive and interrelated, yet simultaneously project an exceptional quality ("never seen or experienced before," "the mother of all battles," "I am the only one who can fix it"). This investigation explores how narrative logic may challenge unified notions of finalities when images remain unfulfilled in a proscribed End. By redeploying transglobal character and narrative potential, the Apocalypse suggests bewildering complexities as it trains its lens on New Beginnings. Here analysis explores resilient formulas for combating the ...
