Performing Identity in the Era of COVID-19

This innovative volume compels readers to re-think the notions of performance, performing, and (non)performativity in the context of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Given these multi-faceted ways of thinking about “performance” and its complicated manifestations throughout the pandemic, this volume is organised into umbrella topics that focus on three of the most important aspects of identity for cultural and intercultural studies in this historical moment: language; race/gender/sexuality; and the digital world. In critically re-thinking the meaning of “performance” in the era of COVID-19, contributors first explore how language is differently staged in the context of the global pandem...

This book engages with how the Siddis in Gujarat and the South African Indians in South Africa perform different forms of creolized socio-cultural practices in the contemporary era. Since the precolonial times, India and South Africa have developed commercial relations through sharing clothing materials, minerals, precious stones, and spices. Besides exchanging physical objects, varieties of cultures, traditions, and rituals were also exchanged between these countries. With the emergence of colonization in both these countries as Africans were brought to India as slaves and Indians were taken to South Africa as indentured laborers, a lot of objects like musical instruments, plant seeds, cook...

New England Marriages Prior to 1700

This work, compiled over a period of thirty years from about 2,000 books and manuscripts, is a comprehensive listing of the 37,000 married couples who lived in New England between 1620 and 1700. Listed are the names of virtually every married couple living in New England before 1700, their marriage date or the birth year of a first child, the maiden names of 70% of the wives, the birth and death years of both partners, mention of earlier or later marriages, the residences of every couple and an index of names. The provision of the maiden names make it possible to identify the husbands of sisters, daughters, and many granddaughters of immigrants, and of immigrant sisters or kinswomen.

Painted with Thread

Painted with Thread is the catalogue accompaniment to the exhibition of the same name at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. This richly illustrated book emphasizes the art inherent in embroidery and contextualizes the examples within aesthetic movements. The objects and designs are myriad: "pictoral embroidery," wool and cotton sailor's pants embroidered with a running whorl stitch resembling tattoo art. Winding vines of flowers in full-bloom rendered to near botanical precision. Samplers sewn by schoolgirls, table covers, fire screens, valances as domestic artifacts with a resonance far beyond the home and the homespun. Painted with Thread presents a breathtaking array of historic American needlework.
