'Pubblicista illuminato' e uomo d'affari, negli anni che precedono il 1848 Cavour raggiunge i livelli più elevati della sua attività di scrittore liberale e ottiene, al tempo stesso, risultati di grandissimo rilievo come pioniere dell'agricoltura moderna a Leri. Nel 1848-1849 si batte contro il rischio di uno sviluppo radicale della rivoluzione democratica in Italia. Ma la direzione del "Risorgimento", l'ingresso nel nuovo Parlamento subalpino e l'occasione di sperimentare in concreto le sue estese competenze finanziarie ne accrescono sempre più l'autorità. Tra i maggiori fautori delle leggi Siccardi, entra al governo come ministro dell'Agricoltura e commercio e poi delle Finanze, realizzando riforme doganali che pongono il Piemonte all'avanguardia del liberismo economico nel continente. Con il 'connubio' nasce quel nuovo partito liberale alla cui testa lo statista ascende, nel novembre 1852, alla guida del governo. L'energica politica di riforme attuata dal suo ministero provoca crescenti resistenze conservatrici, che sembrano preludere alla cessazione dell'esperimento liberale. Alla fine del 1854 lo scontro fra la corona e il movimento liberale è ormai alle porte.

Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture presents a series of unexplored case studies from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, each demonstrating how travellers, scientists, Catholic missionaries, scholars and diplomats coming from the Italian peninsula contributed to understandings of various global issues during the age of early globalization. It also examines how these individuals represented different parts of the world to an Italian audience, and how deeply Italian culture drew inspiration from the increasing knowledge of world ‘Otherness’.
