Topology in Ordered Phases

The concept of topology has become commonplace in various scientific fields. The next stage is to bring together the knowledge accumulated in these fields. This volume contains articles on experiments and theories in connection with topology, including wide-ranging fields such as materials science, superconductivity, charge density waves, superfluidity, optics, and field theory. The nearly 60 peer-reviewed papers include contributions by noted authors Michael V Berry and Roman W Jackiw. The book serves as an excellent reference for both researchers and graduate students. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Optical Vorticulture (90 KB). Contents: Topology as a Universal Concept; Topological Crystals; Topological Materials; Topological Defects and Excitations; Topology in Quantum Phenomena; Topology in Optics; Topology in Quantum Device. Readership: Researchers and graduate students in materials science, condensed matter physics, optics, astrophysics and polymer science.

Toward the Controllable Quantum States

The realizations of physical systems whose quantum states can be directly manipulated have been pursued for experiments on fundamental problems in quantum mechanics and implementations of quantum information devices. Micro-fabricated superconducting systems and electronic spins are among the most promising candidates. This book contains the newest and most advanced research reports on such materials, called “Mesoscopic Superconductivity” and “Spintronics”. The former includes superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems, very small Josephson junctions, and micron-size SQUIDs. The latter includes the control of spin transports in semiconductor heterostructures, nano-scale quantum dots,...

Complexity and Diversity

Complexity and Diversity

Nonlinear complex open systems show great diversity in the process of self-organization, and that diversity increases as complexity increases. The measurement of complexity and the origins of the diversity of such complex systems are the focus of interdisciplinary studies extending across a wide range of scientific disciplines that include applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, ecology, sociology, and economics. Previous investigations have concentrated either on complexity or on diversity, but not both. This volume makes clear the relation between complexity and diversity with examples drawn from various disciplines. Compiles here are presentations from the Complexity and Diversity workshop held in Fugue, Japan, in August 1996. The contributions are the results of research in mathematical systems, physical systems, living systems, and social systems, and are contained in the four corresponding sections of the book. Mathematical expressions for the theory of complexity as a fundamental method along with realistic examples for application of systematic methods provide the reader with ready access to the latest topics in complex systems.

Windows Internals, Part 2

Drill down into Windows architecture and internals, discover how core Windows components work behind the scenes, and master information you can continually apply to improve architecture, development, system administration, and support. Led by three renowned Windows internals experts, this classic guide is now fully updated for Windows 10 and 8.x. As always, it combines unparalleled insider perspectives on how Windows behaves “under the hood” with hands-on experiments that let you experience these hidden behaviors firsthand. Part 2 examines these and other key Windows 10 OS components and capabilities: Startup and shutdown The Windows Registry Windows management mechanisms WMI System mechanisms ALPC ETW Cache Manager Windows file systems The hypervisor and virtualization UWP Activation Revised throughout, this edition also contains three entirely new chapters: Virtualization technologies Management diagnostics and tracing Caching and file system support

This book presents the most important advances in the class of topological materials and discusses the topological characterization, modeling and metrology of materials. Further, it addresses currently emerging characterization techniques such as optical and acoustic, vibrational spectroscopy (Brillouin, infrared, Raman), electronic, magnetic, fluorescence correlation imaging, laser lithography, small angle X-ray and neutron scattering and other techniques, including site-selective nanoprobes. The book analyzes the topological aspects to identify and quantify these effects in terms of topology metrics. The topological materials are ubiquitous and range from (i) de novo nanoscale allotropes o...

Trust, Privacy and Security in Digital Business

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Trust, Privacy and Security in Digital Business, TrustBus 2020, held in Bratislava, Slovakia, in September 2020. The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 11 full and 4 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 28 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: blockchain, cloud security/hardware; economics/privacy; human aspects; privacy; privacy and machine learning; trust.
