Johann Gottfried Scheibel. Vom innersten Wesen des Christentums
Im Doppelamt als Geistlicher und Theologieprofessor war Johann Gottfried Scheibel bis 1830 zum Erweckungsprediger Breslaus geworden. Lutherisches Lehrerbe und pietistische Lebensführung bedeuteten ihm eine unauflösbare Einheit. Sein tatkräftiger Widerspruch gegen die Einführung der Union zwischen Lutheranern und Reformierten in Preußen führte zur selbstständigen Kirchenbildung der sogenannten Altlutheraner. Das brachte eine erhebliche Eingrenzung der Nachwirkung des von ihm hinterlassenen Schrifttums mit sich. Es sollte jedoch nicht übersehen werden, dass sein Kampf gegen die Union lediglich ein Teil der von ihm in strengster Bindung an die Autorität der Heiligen Schrift geführten Auseinandersetzung mit dem Rationalismus in Theologie und Kirche überhaupt war. Insofern besitzen viele seiner inzwischen oft schwer zugänglich gewordenen Ausführungen bleibende Gültigkeit. Die wichtigsten von ihnen finden sich in dieser Auswahlausgabe vereinigt.
