The short-story collection "Last Chance to Renew" by Scott Randall is a rare jewel. If Alice Munro were a man, she would be Scott Randall. The stories are set in southern Ontario, from the Ottawa Valley to the Toronto area. They examine the small moments in ordinary lives with the exacting detail and intimate characterization that Munro has honed to a fine art. This uniquely female storytelling style coupled with a focus on the intimate lives of women has found a huge audience with book-buyers who are, demographically speaking, middle- to upper-middle-class women in their 30s and 40s. But rarely are women given glimpses into the minds of ordinary, middle-class men, often not even their own husbands. Randall uses the "feminine" style and subject matter of popular female authors to see into the minds of men coping with the same problems of marriage, pregnancy, home-buying, child-rearing and widowhood as their wives, but looking at it from their perspective.

In Character Actor, his second collection of short stories, Scott Randall once again gets right to the heart of ordinary characters, not the brilliantly burning stars, but the kind of people we see every day, all around us. In story after story, Randall finds the perfect pitch, from the sly, deadly determination of the ambitious company man who will not be outdone by the threatening new talent, to the law-school dropout who becomes more and more isolated in his shame, his only connection to the academic world the labs where he volunteers for psychology experiments. In an extended story suite, an ordinary dysfunctional family comes undone after the death of a child, each member indelibly mark...

The twelve stories in And to Say Hello investigate the hazards of men and women becoming fathers and mothers: the immediate harm and the long-term damage. In Mass Graves, a new mothers stay-at-home anxieties are amplified by the ominous chipmunk infestation overtaking her townhouse. In Gestation, a father-to-be nurtures the idea of his ex-girlfriends imagined infidelity until it matures into a fully grown mania. In Six, a deceased womans biography and failings as a mother are communicated piecemeal through the ruminations of her pallbearers. In The Vasectomy Doctors Online Presence, the professional and familial successes of an urologist are cruelly and publicly undercut by his failed musical aspirations. And in the title story, a mothers irrational worry about her sons language development puts irreparable strain upon her marriage.

Randalls Round

BORN OF NIGHTMARES... Presented within are nine examples of the finest horror and supernatural literature ever written. Inspired by a series of dreams and nightmares, Helen Leys, writing under the pseudonym Eleanor Scott, crafted these stories of suspense and terror, atmosphere and dread, in 1929 - and never again wrote in this genre; Randalls Round has not been available in the UK since that year. Chilling tales of suspense, antiquity and sacrifice; spine-tingling stories of possession, ancestry, and evil. This collection of deliciously crafted, ghoulish tales are some of the most sought-after by aficionados of the genre and include the superlative 'Celui-la', 'At Simmel Acres Farm' and 'Th...
