Between Philology and Archaeology
This volume celebrates the scientific and academic career of Massimiliano Marazzi, full professor of Aegean and Anatolian History and Philology at the University of Naples "Suor Orsola Benincasa." His lifelong interest in the preclassical cultures of the Mediterranean is reflected in his intense research activity, carried out both as a philologist and as an archaeologist, with a special focus on the records of the Hittite world in both cuneiform and Anatolian hieroglyphic script. The present collection of essays, contributed by colleagues and friends, honors his scholarly contributions in the domain of Anatolian and ancient Near Eastern studies.
Archaeology in Africa. Potentials and perspectives on laboratory & fieldwork research
Africa encompasses a multitude of environments and biomes that require specific scientific strategies – from desktop studies to field research to laboratory analysis – to tackle research questions that may range from the emergence of early humans to the ethnoarchaeological investigation. In several areas, turmoil, social instability and security constraints hamper or limit field activities and long-term funded programs. The kidnapping of German colleagues and the tragic death of two local collaborators in Nigeria urge to rethink our agenda and challenge our view of current research practice. This 1st Workshop on “Archaeology in Africa”, organized by Sapienza University of Rome, convened several researches from Italy or Italy-based researchers. The aim was to present and discuss theoretical, methodological and financial problems for Africanist researchers today. In a global perspective, the synergy between research groups is crucial. The need to intensify the national and international cooperation is also an essential step. This book collects a selection of the different perspectives presented to the workshop, mostly focussing from North Africa and East Africa.

Archaeology of Uplands on a Mediterranean Island
This book presents archaeological research conducted within the Highlands of Sicily. Results of an archaeological survey in the Madonie mountain range, in northern Sicily, supported by a chronological and cultural grid, drawn by the excavation of Vallone Inferno, deal with complex and fascinating problems of uplands and mountainous landscape. Settlement patterns, between the Late Pleistocene and the Medieval era, are investigated through the support of spatial analyses. A diversified use of the mountain is currently attested by this research, according to the different prehistoric and historical times. This work is innovative for the Mediterranean area, where there are no similar examples of such extensive territorial research in a mountainous context. The research has been focused on particular aspects of ancient peopling: economic and social issues, human-environment interactions and the long term interest in the mountain range.
