This work attempts to present Rumi to the English-speaking world and to shed light on his life as seen from within the Islamic mystical tradition. The knowledge presented in this work comes from Sefik Can, a great expert of Rumi and who used to be the highest authority, Sertariq, of the Mevlevi Sufi order in Turkey until he passed away on January 24, 2005. Two aspects of this work make it unique. The first is that the book was originally authored by a man who is ninety five years old and who has dedicated his entire life to the teachings of Rumu. Such a Mevlevi's view of Rumi makes this work greatly valuable. The second important contribution to the book is the foreword, which was translated by from the original turkish, written by M. Fethullah Gulen, a prominent Muslim thinker and interfaith activist of Turkey.

Talking Turkey

This is the book that teachers and others working with Turkish speaking children and young people have long needed. The author's academic rigor combined with his insider's view of the communities' families, culture and work patterns affords readers real understanding of a community which has developed its own diaspora over the last half century but about which there is little research and scant learning support. Part 1 outlines the backgrounds of the Turkish speakers - their immigration and employment patterns - and examines their community and economic activities in some depth. Part 2 is devoted to the children's language and the ways in which they use and acquire both Turkish and English in a range of real-life situations in their families and family businesses, and in their communities. From his analysis of these processes the author identifies what teachers need to know to develop these children's language skills further at school and so enhance their academic attainment. "Talking Turkey" will be essential reading for all those who work with Turkish speakers and will be of interest to teacher trainers, educational policy makers and to the Turkish communities.

This collection of articles by artists, philosophers, psychologists, and social scientists explores the Sufi tradition and its best-known teacher, Rumi, a 13th-century poet, jurist, and philosopher. Setting aside the standard account of Rumi as a poet of mystic love, these contributors view his writings in a historical context, investigating Sufism''s ties to Islam and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad and tracing Rumi''s influence on Persian and Turkish literature. The reasons why Sufism has transcended national boundaries and sectarian strife so successfully are also debated, and several contributors recommend the Sufi message of faith, love, and tolerance as a useful common ground for dialogue between religious groups.

İslam korkuyu reddetmez, hayra tahvilini i...

Sufi Women and Mystics

This book focuses on women’s important contribution to Sufism by analysing the lives and seminal contributions of six mystic Sufi women to Islamic spirituality. To help reverse the sidelining of Sufi women in the recorded academic literature, the author has selected a representative sample of figures from diverse Islamic dynasties with varying backgrounds, social status, and devotional contributions. Taking a historical approach attentive to specific political contexts, readers will be introduced to the contributions of Umm Ali al-Balkhi and Fātima of Nishāpūr in the ninth-century Khurāsān, Aisha al-Mannūbiyya of the Hafsid dynasty in Afriqya, Aisha al-Bā‘únīyya of the Mamlūk d...
