Birahima, jeune garçon, est enrôlé dans une milice pour participer aux guerres ethniques qui ravagèrent l'Afrique de l'ouest à la fin des années 1980 et dans la décennie 1990. Ce roman a obtenu le Prix Renaudot et le Goncourt des lycéens en l'an 2000.
