Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials

A multidisciplinary approach that explores the diverse properties, functions, and applications of nanomaterials Drawing together the many scientific and engineering disciplines underlying the development of nanomaterials, Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials provides a multidisciplinary review of the diverse properties, functions, and applications of nanomaterials. The book examines both nanoparticles, which have larger-scale equivalents, and uniquely assembled nanomaterials, which do not have larger-scale equivalents. Readers will gain a tremendous appreciation of the versatility of nanomaterials as well as an understanding of how the same nanomaterial can have several distinct applications ...

Material Characterization Techniques For Beginners

Characterization is the most important step in the study of materials. The various techniques used for material characterization gives one the knowledge about structure and properties of materials. The present book titled "Material Characterization Techniques for Beginners" is intended to expose readers to various techniques available for material characterization. The book is divided into four themes, Imaging Techniques, Spectroscopy. Diffraction and Scattering Techniques and Electrical Characterization Techniques. The present book is multidisciplinary and designed to be a complete reference book for students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The book deals with various techniques available for material characterization under the four themes mentioned above. The principle and working of each technique are explained in a simple and lucid language. Also, it includes the application of these techniques and which technique to be used for a particular study.

Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry

Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry

The importance of accurate sample preparation techniques cannot be overstated--meticulous sample preparation is essential. Often overlooked, it is the midway point where the analytes from the sample matrix are transformed so they are suitable for analysis. Even the best analytical techniques cannot rectify problems generated by sloppy sample pretreatment. Devoted entirely to teaching and reinforcing these necessary pretreatment steps, Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry addresses diverse aspects of this important measurement step. These include: * State-of-the-art extraction techniques for organic and inorganic analytes * Sample preparation in biological measurements * Sample pretreatment in microscopy * Surface enhancement as a sample preparation tool in Raman and IR spectroscopy * Sample concentration and clean-up methods * Quality control steps Designed to serve as a text in an undergraduate or graduate level curriculum, Sample Preparation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry also provides an invaluable reference tool for analytical chemists in the chemical, biological, pharmaceutical, environmental, and materials sciences.

Surfaces and Interfaces of Ceramic Materials

This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Surfaces and Interfaces of Ceramic Materials, held on the Oleron island, France, in September 1988. This Institute was organized in nine months after receiving the agreement of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. Despite this very short time, most of the lecturers contacted have accepted our invitation to prepare a specific talk. The meeting was held at "La Vieille Perrotine" on the Oleron island. This holiday village of the French CNRS is located near the Ocean in a natural area which contributed to create a very pleasant atmosphere favourable to develop interaction between the 91 participants in this Institute. First of all, the Institute was aimed at diffusing the foremost results on the characterization of and the role played by surfaces, grain boundaries and interfaces in preparation and overall properties of ceramic materials, mainly of oxide ceramics. Through its interdisciplinary character, the Institute was also aimed at developing interaction between scientists and engineers interested in basic and practical aspects of processing and use of ceramics.

Fabrication of Long-Length and Bulk High-Temperature Superconductors

This comprehensive volume is a good summary of the latest developments in high-temperature superconductor (HTS) research and an excellent resource for researchers and managers working in this field. The book is divided into three chapters: coated conductors; BSCCO-based conductors, MgB2 , and other HTS materials; and control of microstructure. Papers include topics such as long-length flexible wires and tapes, melt-textured YBCO materials, processing of HTS materials, the current status and potential for YBCO-based coated conductors, BSCCO-based conductors, and MgB2 based wires. Proceedings of the symposium held at the 105th Annual Meeting of The American Ceramic Society, April 27-30, in Nashville, Tennessee; Ceramic Transactions, Volume 149.

Science of Ceramic Interfaces

A thorough understanding of interface properties is required to meet the increasing demand to develop and design advanced materials of enhanced properties for modern day technology. The significance of surfaces and interfaces in the processing and properties of ceramics is reviewed in this volume in a concentrated and accessible form. Research in this field, involving specialized experimental techniques, sophisticated experimental approaches and theoretical methods of investigations, has resulted in the formation of an independent discipline of the science of ceramic interfaces. This discipline combines several other disciplines such as surface chemistry, high temperature chemistry and ceram...
