The new science of ecological engineering is winning increasing acceptance all over the world. Established industrial economies like Sweden and the United States are investing more in it as initial skepticism and regulatory hurdles are giving way to burgeoning investments by companies and municipalities, increased research activity, and great inter
Ecological economics is a new transdisciplinary approach to understanding and managing the ecology and economics of our world for sustainability on local, regional, and global scales. The previous isolation of these two fields has led to economic and environmental policies that have been mutually destructive rather than reinforcing in the long term. This book brings together these two disciplines in chapters covering the basic worldview of ecological economics; accounting, modeling, and analysis of ecological economicl systems; and necessary institutional changes and case studies.
This work draws on a wide range of Chinese and Japanese sources to analyse the uncertain loyalties and complex internal pressures that drove Sino-Japanese interaction in prewar north China. It examines the shifting understandings of the North China problem in its practical, political and moral aspects, and challenges existing assumptions concerning Chinese relations with Japan and their impact on domestic politics.
Engineering within Ecological Constraints presents a rare dialogue between engineers and environmental scientists as they consider the many technical as well as social and legal challenges of ecologically sensitive engineering. The volume looks at the concepts of scale, resilience, and chaos as they apply to the points where the ecological life support system of nature interacts with the technological life support system created by humankind. Among the questions addressed are: What are the implications of differences between ecological and engineering concepts of efficiency and stability? How can engineering solutions to immediate problems be made compatible with long-term ecological concerns? How can we transfer ecological principles to economic systems? The book also includes important case studies on such topics as water management in southern Florida and California and oil exploration in rain forests. From its conceptual discussions to the practical experience reflected in case studies, this volume will be important to policymakers, practitioners, researchers, educators, and students in the fields of engineering, environmental science, and environmental policy.
Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party was published amidst one of Chinese Communist Party's most brutal persecution—against the 100 million practitioners of Falun Gong in China. When loved ones and witnesses see innocent meditators behind bars, tortured, and harvested for their organs, it is hard to stand on the sideline. That is why so many Chinese people and those sympathetic to the cause are doing one thing they know they can do: Spread the word, quit the Party.
This pathbreaking book is the first full-length study of the rise to power of Jiang Zemin, now the central figure in China's "third generation" of leaders. Tracing Jiang's beginnings as a student in the underground Communist movement in Shanghai through his appointment by Deng Xiaoping as party general secretary and his sudden elevation to central authority in the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing, Bruce Gilley offers a fascinating and highly readable look at how Jiang Zemin has secured his position as one of the world's most powerful figures. Gilley follows Jiang's life and career from his early years as the adopted son of a revolutionary martyr, through his training in Western...

This book is Open Access. A digital copy can be downloaded for free from Wiley Online Library. Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions. Environmental changes caused by LIPs and SLIPs include rapid global warming, global cooling ('Snowball Earth'), oceanic anoxia events, mercury poisoning, atmospheric and oceanic acidification, and sea level changes. Continued research to characterize the effects of these extremely large and typically short duration ...
This groundbreaking book is systematically dismantling the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It is a final verdict on the CCP that has been rapidly spreading in China. During the CCP's 80-year history, its lies, dictatorship, various political movements and crackdowns have wreaked unprecedented havoc on the land of China and caused irreversible damage to China's traditional moral values. In today's China, under the CCP's violent and despotic rule, social tensions are dangerously high and crises are appearing in succession. The Chinese communist regime is seated on an active volcano that may erupt at any moment. The Nine Commentaries have posed the greatest challenge to the CCP's ideology since the party was established. The book has struck a chord deep in the hearts of many Chinese people - in China and around the world. It is poised to be a major part in the rebirth of the nation's soul.
