Elizabethtown

In the 1850s, Elizabethtown flourished due to the traffic from the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and Turnpike. Over the next decades, the community grew in size and population, evolving into the romantic travel destination and quaint hometown that it is now. Today, visitors tour Elizabethtown to immerse themselves in historical significance: the Schmidts Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia, President Abraham Lincolns heritage, Gen. George Armstrong Custers stay before his last stand, Gen. John Hunt Morgans raids during the Civil War, and Philip Arnolds western adventures. The Brown-Pusey House, built around 1825, is open to the public. Couples continue to marry in this historic boarding house and its formal garden.

Tavares

In 1875, wealthy attorney and newspaperman Maj. Alexander St. Clair Abrams and his wife, Joanna, journeyed north from their home in Orlando to a bridge of land weaving through a chain of beautiful lakes. It was here, in the heart of the state, where Major St. Clair Abrams envisioned a town that would someday be the seat of a new county. In 1880, he began to lay out his town, calling it after a Spanish ancestor, a grandee named Lopez Para y Tavares. St. Clair Abrams made Tavares a railroad hub, believing railroads and waterways were the key to growth and prosperity. He built hotels, mills, factories, and parks. Despite a destructive fire in 1888 that leveled the business district and the 1894 and 1895 freezes that set back the citrus industry, settlers continued to arrive. Today, Tavares maintains its small-town charm while it prospers as "America's Seaplane City."

With respect to the plants reviewed in this book and the author's recommendations on plant culture, we will generally be considering plant culture in climates north of the midtemperatures between the Gulf of Mexico and Canada. This does not refer to a straight line east to west across mid-America since temperatures change with elevations. Although I have never gardened in Canada, I assume this would include the southern areas of our northern neighbor, as well as southern areas in the United States, which have higher elevations. As a precaution, I wish to remind people that various plants may be poisonous to taste and, for some people, to touch, so children in particular should be cautioned.
