Free boundary problems arise in an enormous number of situations in nature and technology. They hold a strategic position in pure and applied sciences and thus have been the focus of considerable research over the last three decades. Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications presents the work and results of experts at the forefront of current research in mathematics, material sciences, chemical engineering, biology, and physics. It contains the plenary lectures and contributed papers of the 1997 International Interdisciplinary Congress proceedings held in Crete. The main topics addressed include free boundary problems in fluid and solid mechanics, combustion, the theory of filtration, ...

Studying Bonding and Electronic Structures of Materials Under Extreme Conditions

Recent advances in high pressure diamond anvil cell techniques and synchrotron radiation characterization methods have enabled investigation of a wide range of materials properties in-situ under extreme conditions. High pressure studies have made significant contribution to our understanding in a number of scientific fields, e.g. condensed matter physics, chemistry, Earth and planetary sciences, and material sciences. Pressure, as a fundamental thermodynamic variable, can induce changes in the electronic and structural configuration of a material, which in turn can dramatically alter its properties. The novel phases and new compounds existing at high pressure have improved our basic understa...

Minimax and Applications

Techniques and principles of minimax theory play a key role in many areas of research, including game theory, optimization, and computational complexity. In general, a minimax problem can be formulated as min max f(x, y) (1) ",EX !lEY where f(x, y) is a function defined on the product of X and Y spaces. There are two basic issues regarding minimax problems: The first issue concerns the establishment of sufficient and necessary conditions for equality minmaxf(x,y) = maxminf(x,y). (2) "'EX !lEY !lEY "'EX The classical minimax theorem of von Neumann is a result of this type. Duality theory in linear and convex quadratic programming interprets minimax theory in a different way. The second issue concerns the establishment of sufficient and necessary conditions for values of the variables x and y that achieve the global minimax function value f(x*, y*) = minmaxf(x, y). (3) "'EX !lEY There are two developments in minimax theory that we would like to mention.

Complex Flows in Industrial Processes

Despite the fact that fluid dynamics and filtration through porous media and mathematics, there are classical research areas in engineering, physics, are still many industrial processes that require the study of new mathemat ical models for flows of particular complexity, due to the peculiar properties of the systems involved. The aim of this book is to provide a number of examples showing how frequently such situations arise in various branches of industrial technology. The selection of the subjects was motivated not only by their industrial rel evance and mathematical interest. What I had in mind was a collection of problems having a really distinctive character, thus bringing some fresh a...
