Marcel Dzama

  • Categories: Art

Marcel Dzama (born 1974) is one of contemporary art's hottest stars, and The Infidels is the most beautifully produced and substantial monograph on his work to date. Housed in a beige cloth cover featuring a tipped-in image, The Infidels contains fantastically sharp reproductions of paintings, drawings, film storyboards, collages and dioramas from the past two years, and installation shots from Dzama's exhibition of these works at Sies + Höke Gallery in Düsseldorf. The book also records an increased politicization in the artist's concerns, with references to American history and current events erupting in evocations of torture, terrorism and warfare (a partial result of Dzama's relocation ...

Julius von Bismarck's art can be thought of as artistic research, as both an experiment and a method alike, combining the systems of art and science. Through his installations, videos, and performances von Bismarck investigates the apparatus of human perception, while challenging our habits of perception. His interdisciplinary approach involves creative inquiry into the world and nature, which humankind is altering at an increasing rate. The book contains essays by the philosopher Dehlia Hannah and the curator Nadim Samman, and provides an overview of von Bismarck's latest work, in which the artist explores the destructive beauty of natural forces, such as lightning strikes, tornadoes, and forest fires, as well as natural catastrophes caused by humans.

Idiot

Conceptual Rigor and Elegant Materiality. Kris Martin (b. Kortrijk, 1972; lives and works in Ghent) makes art that fascinates beholders with its conceptual rigor and elegant play with the physical properties of his materials. In installations, sculptu-res, photographs, drawings, writings, and sound pieces, the Belgian conceptual artist raises existential questions. Working in the tradition of the objet trouvé, he performs minute interventions to alter the essence of objects, creating blanks that the beholder can fill with his or her own associations. Through such displacements of context, which reflect his subtle sense of humor, Martin examines the intense experience of time and the ephemeral qualities of art. Published in conjunction with Martin's first solo exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent, the artist's book Idiot is a handwritten copy of the literary classic of the same title by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Martin spent several months faithfully replicating each of 1,496 pages, replacing the hero's name with his own for a unique and peculiar emulation of Prince Myshkin's quest for spiritual transformation.

In his first monograph, German painter Henning Strassburger (born 1983) contemplates how painterly narration translates into today's digital reality, attempting to paint with and in "pictures," mimicking the reproduction inherent in seeing and painting in calligraphic abstractions.

Showcaller' is the first book exploring the work of emerging artist Talia Chetrit. It brings together a broad range of her work made between 1994 and 2018 and is linked to a retrospective museum exhibition at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in early 2018. The title 'Showcaller' is a theatrical term which references the performative aspects of Chetrit's work, the power dynamic between subject and photographer, and, ultimately, between the photographer and her audience. The earliest works included were made when Chetrit was a teenager and she adroitly collapses and shuffles images from across 24 years and neutralizes the space between family portraits, teenage friends, intimate sex pictures, self-...
