I am Ophelia, who can remember her past lives. I am Ophelia, who accidentally killed the man I loved. I am Ophelia, the woman whose soul entered the Afterworld, the place between death and rebirth, after she died yet managed to stay awake. I was given the opportunity to fix my mistake. My soul traveled through time to guide that of the man I love through the Great War and beyond to try to change our future. The eve of the Irish Revolution in 1919 finds Ophelia and Johnny struggling to cross the no man’s land that lies between their broken hearts. Her wild past as a priestess of Artemis in ancient Greece teaches her that real power is being true to oneself, even if that means loving another man. Caught up in the fight for freedom, Ophelia must determine where her heart lies. Their love survived the Great War, but can it survive another? Fenians is the penultimate novel in the Afterworld series and continues the journey begun in the first and second books, Ophelia and Priestess.
In the context of changing constructs of home and of childhood since the mid-twentieth century, this book examines discourses of home and homeland in Irish children’s fiction from 1990 to 2012, a time of dramatic change in Ireland spanning the rise and fall of the Celtic Tiger and of unprecedented growth in Irish children’s literature. Close readings of selected texts by five award-winning authors are linked to social, intellectual and political changes in the period covered and draw on postcolonial, feminist, cultural and children’s literature theory, highlighting the political and ideological dimensions of home and the value of children’s literature as a lens through which to view ...
The full story of the revolutionary period in Kerry from current 'Kerryman' journalists as well as contemporary reports from the archives.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global tourism industry were unprecedented. International travel fell by 72% in 2020, the worst year on record for tourism. Tourism operations, from family businesses to national tourism organizations all faced potential economic ruin. They had to adapt their business practices and adopt new ways of operating, in order to work around ever-changing restrictions. This book is comprised of chapters and case studies previously published by CABI, that deal with the impacts of, and responses to, the COVID-19 pandemic, along with specially written introductory and concluding chapters that provide context. It provides invaluable snapshots of reactions to t...
'The Kerryman' newspaper was established in 1904 and from the start was staunchly republican in its outlook. This brought it into regular conflict with the British establishment and on several occasions it was prevented from publishing, but consistently and defiantly bounced back.Well-known historians Ryle Dwyer, Hélène O'Keeffe and Simon Brouder give accounts of all the significant events in Kerry from the 1916 Rising through to the end of the Civil War. These include the chaotic attempt to land arms from the German ship 'Aud', the tragic and horrifying death of Thomas Ashe, the Free State landings at Fenit and elsewhere during the Civil War and the grim atrocities of March 1923 across the county.Contemporary reports from the paper have also been included, which bring the events of the time very much to life.
A true story of high finance, murder, and one man's fight for justice.
Focusing on W.B. Yeats's ideal of mutual support between the arts and on the cultural production of the Yeats circle members, Karen Brown explores the artistic relationships and outcome of Yeats's vision in five case studies. In so doing, the author makes use of primary materials and fresh archival evidence, and delves into a variety of media, including embroidery, print, illustration, theatre, costume design, poetry, and painting.
Newborn babies are usually fed via the breast which ensures optimal development and emotional mother-child bonding. However, in some circumstances breast feeding may be either inadequate or impractical. Historically, deficiencies in the provision of breast milk were addressed by wet-nurse feeding but this was superseded by the introduction of artificial milk feeds, i.e. formula or bottle feeds. This handbook covers formula feeds in the most comprehensive way. Each contribution starts with convenient summary points. Six parts give information about historical and international aspects (South American, African and Chinese perspectives), composition, microbiological and chemical contaminants, allergy and immunology, effects on physical development and metabolic responses, and effects on psychological and neurodevelopment. The ‘Handbook of dietary and nutritional aspects of bottle feeding’ is essential reading material for nutritionists, dieticians, paediatricians, midwives, pharmacologists, health care professionals, general practitioners and those interested in babies health in general.
This book is based on the mini-workshop Renormalization, held in December 2006, and the conference Combinatorics and Physics, held in March 2007. Both meetings took place at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Mathematik in Bonn, Germany. Research papers in the volume provide an overview of applications of combinatorics to various problems, such as applications to Hopf algebras, techniques to renormalization problems in quantum field theory, as well as combinatorial problems appearing in the context of the numerical integration of dynamical systems, in noncommutative geometry and in quantum gravity. In addition, it contains several introductory notes on renormalization Hopf algebras, Wilsonian renormalization and motives.
