Historic Tales of Windham

"The natural beauty and fertile lands of Windham drew first the Pawtucket Indians and then Scotch-Irish settlers. The town's rich history is full of intriguing stories, including Wallace Fessenden's unscrupulous baseball umpiring, the return of a native son after his burial at sea in Indonesia and the poetic life of the Rustic Bard, Robert Dinsmoor. Tourism boomed as early as the 1850s, when visitors flocked to the waterside temptations of Canobie Lake and later Cobbett's Pond, where eccentric millionaire Edward Searles built his famous castle. Local historian Derek Saffie weaves together a collection of historic stories from the settlment's roots as Nutfield to the town of Windham"--Back cover.

The True and the Good

Philosophical thinking about truth has revolved around two key questions. First, what is the nature of truth? Second, why should we value it? It has proven difficult to answer both questions at once. Some theories analyse truth in terms of goodness. Truth is a specific kind of goodness for beliefs. They have an easy explanation of truth's value, but they obscure the connection between truth and how things are. What does belief have to do with whether it's true that there is water on Mars? Other theories treat truth as a descriptive feature: a claim is true when things are as it says they are. Such theories face a version of G. E. Moore's open question problem. How could a claim's purely desc...

Inspired By . . .

This is the sixth anthology in the series begun by the Arts Alliance Pine Rivers. Again we have short stories and poetry illustrated by local artists. In 2015, we are privileged to have contributions from artists of the Pine Rivers U3A advanced class tutored by Lillian Tebesceff. We include four stories from winners in the Peter Campbell Memorial / WAG Literary Awards for local high school students. This year's title Inspired by . . . brings together a diversity of short stories and poetry, each one inspired by literary classics or authors' peculiar interests. Each year brings a different flavour to our anthology. This year many writers independently chose to render mystery or adventure tales. Add spices of humour, fantasy and drama and you have a literary feast.

No other official record or group of records is as historically significant as the 1790 census of the United States. The original 1790 enumerations covered the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, not all the schedules have survived, the returns for the states of Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia having been lost or destroyed, possibly when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812, though there seems to be no proof for this. For Virginia...
