The Railway Clearing House

Originally published in 1968, and using official records, this book charts the history of the Railway Clearing House and shows the vital role it played in the development of British railways and the growth of the economy. The Clearing House established a common classification of goods; standardized signalling systems and telegraphic codes among the 120 railway companies which operated in Britain before the First World War. It was the nerve centre of the railway for nearly a century and at one time more than 2,500 clerks were employed in its huge offices near Euston Station in London.

Railways have played an immense part in the history of New South Wales. The parallel lines extended as the population grew and themselves made possible new settlement and new industries. Railways crossed the mountain barriers that surround Sydney and opened up both the vast hinterland and the northern and southern coasts. Railways joined every part of New South Wales to Sydney in a distinctive, centralized pattern. They also joined New South Wales to the neighbouring colonies and states.

The Great Central Railway

“Sets out to address what really happened . . . through its LNER days and into British Railways custodianship . . . A well-researched and presented tome.” —Key Model World For generations of railway enthusiasts and more lately for social historians, the life and times of the former Great Central Railway and in particular its extension towards London in the 1890s and closure seventy years later, have generated considerable interest and controversy. Although many books have been written about the Railway, the majority in recent times have concentrated upon providing a photographic record and a nostalgic look in retrospect to what was generally perceived as happier times for the route.
